The Role

AARNet is seeking an experienced Regional Civil Design & Construction Planner to design telecommunications fibre optic projects in regional Australia.

The role will require you to utilise field data combined with your Construction Design knowledge to produce detailed drawings and plan routes for national fibre projects. Your in-depth understanding of construction methodologies will support you to analyse regional geography, geology, archaeology and environmental information as they relate to the installation of fibre optic cable. Your ability to think critically about the buildability of our regional projects will see you succeed in this role.

Drawing on your experience in designing or building telecommunications infrastructure you will play a key role in the planning of critical network projects. You will work closely with our Strategic Infrastructure and Customer Relations teams to plan & deliver projects that power network services for a range of customers across Australia including regional schools, major universities and innovative research centres.

Responsibilities

Working within the Infrastructure Development group you directly design fibre optic paths for regional infrastructure builds. You’ll investigate and plan potential projects as well as provide technical expertise to strategic network infrastructure decisions. Liaising with internal teams and external stakeholders, you will balance technical project requirements, with civil construction methodology options to produce project drafts, drawings & proposals that are commercially viable & meet strategic objectives.

Your interpersonal skills will support you to connect and empathise with internal and external stakeholders ranging from customers to impacted land owners (previous experience in first person land access/negotiation is highly desirable but not essential). You will demonstrate excellent communication skills both written and verbal to interpret project requirements as well as provide clear and concise messaging. The variety & volume of projects will draw on your effective organisation and planning skills.

Your previous experience with construction drafting & design will provide the foundations for your ability to turn vision into a buildable concept. Projects will range in size, location & complexity and regular travel to regional locations across Australia will be required to get an ‘on the ground’ understanding of the network, this will assist you to conceptualize projects and potential paths. Your strong proficiency with design software such as AutoCad will support you to produce high quality and detailed designs that will be used by Construction Managers, Field Teams and Senior Management.

Drawing on your excellent problem solving abilities you will take a strategic & analytical approach to your planning activities and assist the groups reporting functions. Supported by your attention to detail, you will effectively identify risks to path options and use your industry knowledge to estimate costs associated with proposed routes. Acting as a crucial source of knowledge during the construction phase you will continue liaise with managers and resolve design issues during the lifecycle of the build. Analysing real-time site information to make effective construction decisions in collaboration with group management.

A capacity to observe, learn and apply new knowledge efficiently with a positive attitude will empower you to excel in this role. This is an outcome focused role and will suit someone who can perform high-level planning and analysis, (holistic mindset), then continue as a key stakeholder on the project as it goes into a full design stage.

Expertise, experience & qualifications
  • You have good written and verbal communication skills
  •  You have strong computer skills and are comfortable using a range of design software including AutoCad & Visio
  • You have knowledge and experience with construction methodologies
  • You have experience designing construction routes in the telecommunications industry. Similar underground construction industries such as Power or Pipelines will be considered.
  • You have strong organisation and planning skills
  • You have good interpersonal skills and will enjoy working collaboratively
