The Organisation
You will be based in a 305-bed facility that is the main referral hospital for Central Queensland. Specialist Medical Services include Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, Cardiology, Renal Medicine, Palliative Care, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation, Geriatric Medicine, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology, ENT, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Intensive Care and Anaesthesia. There are also a range of clinical services provided on a visiting basis from tertiary hospitals in Queensland. A new Cancer Care Unit provides care for local patients, with state-of-the-art equipment and services.
The Department of Medicine provides Internal medicine services for the regions and has an allocation of 32 medical beds, 8 “48-hour” beds, 5 coronary care beds, 9 palliative care beds (including chemotherapy) and outpatient clinics each week.
The Department of Nephrology provides comprehensive renal services including renal transplant (except acute transplant), acute and chronic kidney diseases, Dialysis (both haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis), Satellite dialysis units, Tele-health and in-patient and outpatient renal services. The Nephrology team consists of 3 Nephrologists, 1 Advanced Trainee, 1 Basic Physician Trainee and 1 RMO.
The Nephrology CME programs include weekly renal topic teaching and monthly histo-pathology meetings with Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital.
The Job
- This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Nephrologist to assist the Director of Medicine with the organisation, management and provision of Specialist Renal Services.
- Your prime inpatient responsibility will be to supervise inpatients admitted under Renal Services, performing procedures including renal biopsy [Permcath insertion and acute vascular access (Vascath) insertion are preferred procedural skills] as required and provision of clinical input to consultations from the various disciplines in the hospitals
- Your prime outpatient responsibility will be clinical assessment and provision of comprehensive management plans.
- You will be required to manage haemodialysis patients in the service through telehealth and regular site visits to rural facilities as scheduled.
- The Consultant will also contribute clinically to the organisation, management and provision of comprehensive, state-wide renal transplant services.
- You will actively participate in the renal outreach program and telehealth services
- Consultant Nephrologists will have accredited skills in Renal Biopsy and procedural skills in Permcath insertion and acute vascular access (Vascath), experience in Haemodialysis permanent catheter insertion and renal biopsy, and extensive experience in managing patients with all spectrum of renal diseases including dialysis and transplant patients.
- You will also engage in academic medicine, teaching and relevant research in General Medicine and Nephrology and provide education on your specialist area through training seminars and tutorials to clinical staff.
- You will actively participate in Division of Medicine CME programs, UQ medical student teaching and examination and the RACP Basic Physician Training program.
