About Monash Doctors

To help grow your career, there are more than 1,900 Junior and 1,700 Senior Doctors at Monash Health in over 200 medical specialties. We offer unparallel opportunities in Victoria's largest & most clinically diverse teaching health service.

About Monash Children's

We care for more than 100,000 children every year. Monash Children's Hospital is part of Monash Health, Victoria's largest healthcare service and one of only four accredited Academic Health Science Centres in Australia. We have access to the world's leading medical minds which are turning research findings into better health outcomes for our patients. Monash Children's Hospital is a network of paediatric healthcare services across three sites - our main campus in Clayton (co-located with Monash Medical Centre) and satellite sites at Dandenong and Casey Hospitals.

Monash Children's Hospital is also the Victorian Referral Centre for many low-volume and high-complex cases. Our services are linked to an adult service, allowing us to provide transition-of-care as children grow older and move to an adult service.

We deliver specialised, innovative, family-centred care and believe strongly in putting patients first and striving for exceptional care and outstanding outcomes.

About Adolescent Medicine Unit

The Adolescent Medicine Unit sits within the Monash Health Children's Program, located at Monash Children's Hospital, Clayton. The Unit provides expert inpatient and outpatient services for adolescents aged 12 to 18 years with a variety of acute and chronic medical problems (including specialist management of patients with eating disorders) that may or may not be complicated by additional psychiatric comorbidities. We provide expert assessment and ongoing management for these conditions and pride ourselves on establishing strong relationships with young people and their families. These relationships are at the core of the treatment plan.

We are one of only four specialist adolescent medical units in Victoria providing inpatient and outpatient care for young people with eating disorders. Covid-19 has seen a universal increase in presentations of eating disorders amongst the adolescent age group. The Adolescent Medicine Unit faces particular challenges due to the complex nature of our work and the patients in our care. The Unit has grown into an expert team which includes Paediatricians with expertise in adolescent health, a Nurse Coordinator, Dietitians, Psychologists and administrative staff. The Unit is supported by a multi-disciplinary team consisting of mental health colleagues, MCH educators, and allied health staff. We, as a team, support each other and understand the importance of providing excellence in care - to each other and to the patients in our care.

About the Role

The Adolescent Consultants are responsible for providing exemplary care to all inpatients and outpatients, to undertake on-call duties which includes supervision of junior medical staff, and attendance at either/both of the Unit's two weekly clinics (Eating Disorders clinic and the Adolescent Medical clinic). The Adolescent Paediatric Consultants are responsible for assessing and reviewing outpatients with complex medical issues, developmental concerns, eating disorders, etc. Supervision and support of junior medical staff is a key component of clinic attendance.

Key result areas:

  • Support and assist the Head of Unit in the provision of high quality paediatric services.
  • Provide clinical leadership through active involvement in patient care.
  • Ensure all on-call duties are attended to in a timely, professional and compassionate manner, ensuring inpatients are provided with compassionate patient-centred care and junior medical staff are well supported.
  • Provide exemplary medical assessment and review of adolescents attending the Adolescent Medicine Unit clinics.
  • Be available to medical colleagues for consultation and liaison as appropriate regarding patient care.
  • Contribute to ongoing service improvement and clinical and workforce innovation to ensure Monash Health provides high quality accessible Adolescent Services within allocated resources and meets the needs of Monash Health patients.
  • Maintain clinical knowledge, skills and attributes appropriate to paediatrics.
  • Undertake opportunities to advance the work of the Adolescent Medicine Unit through quality improvements, research, education, etc.
