Emergency Department - Peer Support Worker

• Supporting our consumers coming through the Emergency Department

We are seeking an enthusiastic, resilient and experienced Peer Support Worker. The purpose of the role is to provide Peer Support and information to consumers who attend the Royal Melbourne Hospital Emergency Department who may be presenting in mental health crisis and requiring Alcohol and other Drug (AoD) services. The work will focus on support for the consumer at the time of discharge, post discharge follows up and while they are accessing the services of the Emergency Department. The Peer Support Worker will work closely with other lived experience workers and clinical staff.

• Work with a close knit team of lived experience professionals that are dynamic, innovative and supportive.
• Your work will involve liaising with other lived experience staff in Emergency Department and EMH roles across various programs.
• As part of the Lived Experience team you will be invited to our weekly team meeting, will be part of our co-reflection space and will have a monthly line management catch up.
• Supervision is provided to all lived experience staff.

About you:

• Empower consumers to make their own choices about their treatment and recovery with an emphasis on strengthening their internal resources to move forward.
• Support individuals to create external links in the community for ongoing support.
• Assist consumers by ensuring they actively participate in their own identified recovery goals.
• This role will work with a clinical team, requires an understanding of how mental health services work, a resilient and positive approach, and good communication skills.
• Be a true team player with confidence and desire to share their wisdom, knowledge and experience.
• Lived experience of mental illness is an essential prerequisite for this role and a good understanding of Peer Support frameworks would be beneficial.
• Demonstrate compassion and resilience, providing Peer Support and information to mental health consumers in both inpatient and outpatient service settings.
