The Environmental Operations Branch is responsible for the preservation, management and enhancement of council’s diverse range of environmental and nature-based recreation assets and in partnership with our community, the rich biodiversity of the region’s landscapes.
The Coordinator Environmental Education and Recreation will be someone who can plan for and manage the forecast growth in demand for access to Council’s Environmental Visitor Centres, nature-based recreation precincts and regional nature-based recreation offerings across the Sunshine Coast region, including our future Parklands Olympic mountain bike venue and world-class nature-based recreation precinct.
You’ll be a natural leader, who has the ability to lead strategic planning, business development and delivery of world-leading Environmental Education and nature-based recreation precincts, assets and programs.
Someone who can collaborate with relevant team members, key stakeholders, our community and visitors to enhance and expand Environmental Education and engagement outcomes to help deliver on Council’s vision to be Australia’s most sustainable region.
You’ll be adept at leveraging business and community partnerships, and commercial opportunities to attract investment and funding to support the delivery of world-class, fit-for-purpose, innovative and sustainable nature-based recreation, Education and engagement outcomes.

About you
As a Coordinator in Environmental Education and Recreation, you will be degree qualification and/or extensive demonstrated experience in a leadership capacity in Nature-Based Recreation, Ecotourism, Business Development, Environmental Education, Community Engagement and/or Environmental Science, or related disciplines. Post graduate qualification desirable.
You will have demonstrated understanding of the international, national and regional economic, environmental, social and cultural opportunities associated with environmental visitor centres and nature-based recreation precincts and delivering world-class Environmental Education, recreation and visitor engagement experiences.
You possess a natural flair in community and industry engagement, partnership development, business development, and leveraging significant funding and investment to support environmental visitor centres and nature-based recreation facilities.
As a requirement of this role, you will have demonstrated understanding and associated application of relevant government policies, strategies, legislation, codes of practice, safety standards, and best-practice risk management, associated with Environmental Education and nature-based recreation facilities and programs.
You will have to demonstrate a high degree of initiative and strong decision-making skills with proven ability in contemporary project management practices, financial management, business development, change management and human resource management.
It is essential for you to have strong interpersonal and communication skills with a particular emphasis in the areas of advocacy, liaison, consultation, building effective relationships and teams, negotiation, conflict resolution and assertiveness, with the ability to meet changing organisational needs within a diverse and political environment.
Given the nature of role there may be some requirement for employees to undertake work outside of normal office hours.
As such, appointment to this position is subject to completion of a pre-employment medical assessment.
