ABOUT THE AGENCY
Stella Maris is an agency of the Catholic Archdiocese of Perth which provides support in the areas of spiritual, social and material welfare of all seafarers in the Inner Harbour of Fremantle.
ABOUT THE ROLE - A SNAPSHOT
- Be part of a ministry offering Pastoral Care to all seafarers
- Based at the Stella Maris Centre in Fremantle
- Afternoon/evening working hours from 2pm – 10pm
- 3.5 days additional paid leave each year
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO DO
Provision of support in the areas of spiritual, social and material welfare of all seafarers in the Inner Harbour of Fremantle. The Coordinator will work with volunteers, relevant personnel in the Port, and the local Catholic parish in the Pastoral Care and Support to seafarers.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Pastoral Care
- Coordinate the operations of the Centre in accordance with a commitment to the Mission of Stella Maris.
- Develop and implement a strategy and plan for effective ship visiting program within the inner harbour of Fremantle.
- Visit the ships in the Port or make provision for their visitation on a regular basis.
- Swiftly and efficiently respond to emergencies involving an individual seafarer or group of seafarers, where appropriate in close liaison with port authorities or other relevant bodies.
Church and Community
- Work with the local community and local Catholic parish to provide effective chaplaincy Support for Seafarers.
- Provide spiritual support to seafarers as appropriate, including visiting and providing support to seafarers in hospital.
Communication
- Consult and co-operate with the Head, Mission Enhancement and Outreach - Archdiocesan Agencies all matters of concern and importance to the Mission.
- Maintain the necessary records of service delivery on ships and produce monthly / quarterly reports.
- Build and sustain relationships with port authorities, maritime agencies, local Catholic parish, and other ecumenical and interfaith environments as required.
Leadership and Coordination
- Oversee Centre operations and resources on a daily basis, including mail, email, banking, petty cash, volunteer rosters.
- Recruit, coordinate, train, supervise and motivate a team of staff and volunteers who support seafarers.
- Provide transportation for Seafarers as required within operating hours of the Centre.
- Take responsibility for work health and safety compliance and ensure all relevant Archdiocesan policies are implemented and reported upon
- Ensure that the Centre has adequate and suitable resources to complete its activities, including daily reports on shipping schedules, foreign exchange rates and Mass and Reconciliation times.
Financial
- Scope and apply for relevant grants and coordinate fund-raising initiatives.
Professional Development and Relationships
- Attend relevant conferences, seminars and courses in consultation with the Head, Mission Enhancement and Outreach - Archdiocesan Agencies.
- Engage with State and national Stella Maris peak bodies and counterparts.
Visiting ships is an essential part of the role. You may be required to climb ladders / stair wells leading to the deck on board ships. It is a requirement that the coordinator ship visit, and this may necessitate several ships a day. The Coordinator must have the physical ability to carry out all tasks required of the position.

Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Catholic background with commitment to ensure the culture of Stella Maris is an authentic environment that promotes the Gospel imperatives of welcome and care.
- Understand and develop the ministry and its supporting role of seafarers and Maritime industry throughout Australia.
- Well-developed verbal and written communication skills with the ability to prepare written reports and grant submissions.
- Ability to liaise and consult effectively with a range of key stakeholders.
- Excellent negotiation skills and capacity to provide practical solutions as necessary.
- Ability to identify, assess and control work, health and safety issues.
- Hold a current Western Australian driver’s licence.
- Current first aid training.
Desirable:
- Experience working in a Catholic organisation.

- A willingness and capacity to support the Catholic ethos and publicly support and articulate the mission of Stella Maris.
- Physical ability to carry out all tasks required of the position.
- Highly motivated independent person who is able to work under own initiative and unsupervised.
- Collaborative, inclusive and prepared to work ecumenically and inter-faith environment.
- Culturally aware with the ability to relate to people from many different countries.
- Flexible in approach with the ability to adapt quickly and function well in unfamiliar environments.
- Resilience and an ability to remain calm and deliberate in emergency situations.
A valid National Police Clearance, pre-employment medical check, WA Driver’s Licence, and First Aid Training required.
