KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide all options pro-choice decision-making counselling to clients and their support people, supporting informed choices on pregnancy, parenting, adoption, and abortion.
  • Offer pre and post-abortion counselling, and develop skills in evidence-based counselling modalities to support this area of practice.
  • Maintain up-to-date referral information and develop effective working relationships with health and social system professionals.
  • Record and maintain confidential counselling case notes and client statistics in accordance with professional standards.
  • Support client self-advocacy and advocate on their behalf with their consent.
  • Develop evidence-based information resources and deliver professional development for community, health, and allied health professionals, participate and engage in research projects.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Commitment to the goals of Children by Choice and the right to choose abortion.
  • Possession of a degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, Human Services or related fields.
  • Demonstrated ability, skills and experience in counselling women from a feminist perspective.
  • An ability to work collaboratively within a team environment including excellent communication skills, strong computer, database management, and administration skills, as well as the ability to work proactively and autonomously.
  • Demonstrated skills and commitment to client advocacy including the ability to support clients to navigate health service pathways, link with local community supports and source financial support options.
  • Detailed knowledge of (or capacity to rapidly acquire) women's health issues, in particular reproductive health, pregnancy options support and abortion care.
  • Capacity to contribute to systemic initiatives around abortion access including delivery, research and analysis, project planning and campaigning.
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook). Ability to quickly become familiar with and manage databases, and filing systems.
  • Ability to plan your time effectively to manage competing demands, including work/life balance and management of burnout and self-care.
