The role:

The Cyber Defence Specialist is responsible for the management of Cyber threats, enhancing security controls, and maintaining an appropriate incident response practice. This role is a blend of incident response and driving efforts to bolster defences and ensure resilience. 

Reporting to the Manager of IT Security and Governance, this role is based in in Belmont on a permanent full-time basis.

Some of the responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

  • Incident response for detected security events and incidents from a variety of sources
  • Maintain selected internal tools in partnership with St John WA's IT partner(/s), including tuning of tooling for improved security and business outcomes
  • Work closely with St John WA's Managed SOC / MXDR provider(/s) to optimize detection and response provide by the service
  • Support processes to engage external agencies such as government, law enforcement and incident response firms in the event of an incident
  • Develop, test, and actively maintain incident response plans and playbooks
  • Work with key stakeholder groups to develop and maintain end to end processes for responding to Cyber events and incidents
  • Identify and drive areas of improvement for St John WA's defences against Cyber threats
  • Maintain a schedule of Penetration Testing activities in collaboration with the Manager IT Security & Governance and the broader Digital Services leadership team
  • Collaborate with the broader IT Security & Governance practice to continue to develop the practice, and optimize outcomes for St John WA
  • Contribute to the Security Awareness & Education Program

Skills and Attributes required:

  • Relevant Cyber Security certifications are desirable (ie CISSP, CISM, SABSA, etc).
  • Advanced knowledge Cyber Security.
  • Sound understanding of Cyber Incident Detection and Response.
  • Knowledge of key technical capabilities (ie: DLP, SIEM, IDS/IPS, EDR/EPP, SOAR)
  • Ability to work with multiple IT services providers including MSSPs to ensure optimal security outcomes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Tertiary qualifications in the field or a related discipline are desirable

Experience required:

  • 5+ years working in a similar capacity
  • Hands on experience is advantageous in tooling across DLP, SIEM, Vulnerability Management, EDR/EPP
  • Direct experience in incident response, security operations, and security engineering all advantageous
