(HE08) $106,561 to $119,550 per annum plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation applies.
Fixed term, full time position available for 12 months, with the possibility of extension.
Together with the University of Adelaide's ITDS and Research Computing teams, the South Australian immunoGENomics Cancer Institute (SAiGENCI) is inviting applications to apply for the Data and Research Computing Specialist position. This position will report to the Director, Research Infrastructure and Platforms in the Division of Research and Innovation at The University of Adelaide with an aligned responsibility to the Head, Data Sciences Unit, at The South Australian ImmunoGenomics Cancer Institute (SAiGENCI).
SAiGENCI is located in the AHMS building in Adelaide's biomedical precinct on North Terrace and undertakes world class cancer research in cancer biology, computational biology, epigenetics, and immuno-oncology. Advances in data generation and computational analysis as well as the reduction in costs of sequencing and the advancement of spatial maps, has led to the increased requirement for specialist data handling and management of big data. Such large and complex data sets require storage, access, processing and analytical management.
The Data and Research Computing Specialist will play a key role in supporting scientists across SAiGENCI, in particular the Computational Systems Oncology team. The role will be based in the Data Science Unit and will provide support, training and advice that will enable the proficient use of the high-performance computing resources and data storage options available to us. Candidates who have exceptional ability to overcome challenges in compute, networking, and storage design for large-scale, high-performance workloads are strongly encouraged to apply. Most importantly, this role will be responsible and accountable for the effective communication of these computational requirements and needs to the University of Adelaide's ITDS and Research Computing teams.
Applicants should have a postgraduate degree (preferably in information management, information technology, computing or data-intensive research discipline) or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training (in data management or imaging processing).
To be successful you will need:

  • Strong technical knowledge and demonstrated expertise in the configuration and management of Research Computing infrastructure (eg. HPC systems and virtual environments, including, GCP, AWS)
  • Knowledge and understanding of Research Computing software, and devops software (e.g git), including containerization tools and analytical workflow pipelines such as singularity, docker, nextflow, CWL
  • Experience in designing solutions that provides a secure platform for processing large sensitive data sets on shared HPC systems, including the storage and management of access/edit permissions to files as well as a way easily to retrieve data based on meta-data.
  • Understanding of the Research Computing needs of researchers in medical research including bioinformatics, genomics, biostatistics
  • Demonstrated highly developed written and oral communication skills, including the ability to liaise and teach effectively with a wide and diverse range of people and have good report writing skills.
