The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to recruit several permanent and temporary Specialist Software Developers for our Technology and Security Division.
Staff in these roles work on a range of interesting and innovative projects. Whilst some of the roles have a higher degree of specialisation, we offer opportunities for career development and exposure to diverse projects and subject matters areas over time, tailored to individual capabilities and interests.
You will utilise your previous experience working with one or more of the following technologies:
- AWS technologies: API Gateway, Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, RDS, ECS, CloudFormation, Sagemaker
- Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
- Java, JBoss, JSF, Web technology (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), ReactJS, Python, Postgres, Oracle, PL/SQL
- JIRA, BitBucktet, Docker, Gitlab
- Webservices and Apis (SOAP, REST, and GraphQL)
- Azure technologies: Synapse, Purview, ADO, AVD, Bicep, ARM, AAD, Cosmo DB, Logic Apps
- please note, we are always on the lookout for people with experience in technologies such as: Blaise, HCL Notes Script, GIT source control products, Drupal frameworks.
About the roles
Specialist Software Developers will work as a member of a team, delivering a range of technology solutions, primarily on the cloud for projects. The role will require software development skills and a proven ability to work within an integrated team.
As a Specialist Software Developer (APS 6 level), you will have the following responsibilities:
- contribute to and support leadership efforts to improve software processes
- promote and align to common and good practice methods and techniques, and to identify and pursue opportunities for improved software capability
- maintain and continuously improving software products by contributing to the code base
- contribute to a shared knowledge base through technical documentation
- foster a collaborative environment by participating in code reviews and assisting other team members
- utilise excellent written and verbal communication skills to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and engage effectively with various stakeholders
- demonstrate commitment to uphold the ABS and APS values, adhering to the APS code of conduct and employment principles.
As a Specialist Software Developer (EL 1 level), in addition to the APS 6 responsibilities above, you will also have the following responsibilities:
- utilise effective leadership skills to work autonomously and lead in an environment of ambiguity and change
- coach, mentor and manage staff
- liaise with internal and external stakeholders (including vendors), leveraging their expertise to resolve critical issues and inform decisions
- work collaboratively with various stakeholders at the system developer and architect level
- establish best practice patterns and practices that align with business needs and the enterprise direction.
