Data Architect, this role sits in UNSW IT, daily rate contract role

UNSW IT is part of UNSW’s Finance and Operations Division and provides reliable, cost effective and state of the art IT services. The Division was established in recent years to provide corporate services in support of the Faculties and Divisions. As part of this change the UNSW IT team continues to evolve as it works toward its ambition of being a world class technology delivery and support team enabling the University with world class solutions and capabilities. UNSW IT is guided by the UNSW Technology Strategy which has identified key strategic goals and capabilities for UNSW technology.
The primary purpose of the Data Architect is to lead the development of target state architecture and strategy for specific business or technology domains and to ensure that the program of work is delivered in alignment to this target state. The role will lead the development of policies, standards, frameworks and architectural roadmaps to guide the planning, selection, design and implementation of solutions within these domains, and will also support IT governance. The incumbent will build collaborative relationships with senior stakeholders, vendors and application teams in the divisions and faculties, to understand and effectively translate diverse business needs and the capabilities of our strategic partners into sustainable IT solutions. This position will report into the Enterprise Data Strategy and Architecture.
Specific accountabilities for this role include:
The role of the Data Risk Remediation - Data Architect requires a blend of technical expertise, strategic thinking, communication skills and focuses on building an understanding of the data estate within UNSW and, defining the Data Architecture required to support Data Risk Remediation initiatives within UNSW. Specific responsibilities for this role include:
Conducting comprehensive assessments of the existing data platforms, identifying areas of complexity, duplication, or inefficiency.
Review current data governance framework within UNSW and, define changes required to further reduce the data risk.
Define actions to reduce the data risk created by unnecessary holdings of identity documents and other personal information (PI) in a number of repositories and, define relevant approach to remediate the identity documents held in identified systems.
Building an understanding of the key data governance use cases at UNSW and, conduct option analysis for Data Governance tools available in market and produce appropriate recommendation and roadmap for adoption.
Review and define Business Glossary and Data Catalog process and templates.
Collaborating with stakeholders to create a Data roadmap aligned with the UNSW’s goals and objectives. This involves defining strategies to reduce complexity, consolidate systems, and improve efficiency.
Developing simplified, scalable, and agile technology architectures that streamline processes, reduce dependencies, and enhance interoperability among systems and applications.
Skills and Experience
Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field or equivalent service experience providing architecture and consulting.
Extensive and broad Data Architecture experience.
Extensive experience with Data Governance tools.
Desirable – Experience with Azure and AWS cloud technologies and with exposure to technologies like Databricks, Oracle, PowerBI etc.
Desirable - other corporate / higher education architecture experience
Ability to engage effectively with business and IT stakeholders, understand demand for technology services, distil complex business issues into easily understood messages and successfully communicate opportunities for greater business efficiency and effectiveness.
Excellent written and verbal presentation and negotiation skills, with the ability to structure and articulate messages to different audiences at all levels.
Extensive experience and knowledge of Data Architecture and design, creating and maintain blueprints, reference models, and lifecycle models for technology solutions.
Demonstrated experience in performing technical governance in a complex environment
Recognised as a subject matter expert, able to give specialist advice to others and with experience of driving technology change.
Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
