Purpose of the position:

Due to an expanding workload, we are looking for an experienced Data Scientist (with a specialisation in GIS and the carbon emissions/offsets market). The role will join our Toowoomba team full-time, be a part of key project activities and help us continue to deliver on our vision of 'Creating Innovative Solutions for Agriculture and the Environment." We aim to deliver this vision by enabling our clients to understand their supply chain environmental impacts, set meaningful sustainability targets, deliver lower environmental impacts over the short, medium and long term and offset / inset where required.

The Data Scientist will use their high-level data analysis skills to deliver projects and support the IA team in delivering industry-leading projects for major food, fibre and agribusiness clients around Australia.

About THE ROLE

Key responsibilities & duties

The role will include the following responsibilities:

  1. Conducting statistical and spatial modelling using statistical methods and remote sensing techniques. This will include integration/calibration of in-field data
  2. Writing scripts and creating Excel calculators to automate processes
  3. Consulting with team members on best statistical practices
  4. Researching and implementing solutions to mathematical/statistical problems to support large-scale data collection activities
  5. Working with consultants and extension officers in the team to analyse farm and production system data, understand and follow data collection standards, data models/schemas and data collection processes, and work with the wider team to interpret results
  6. Actively represent IAE’s values (Integrity | Innovation | Care) in all that you do, with reference to all relevant company procedures, including regard for the health and safety of yourself and your colleagues.

Requirements (e.g. academic qualifications, work experience and skills):

Ideally, 3-7 years of proven experience in:

  • Spatial modelling and analysis (vector and raster) in ArcGIS
  • carbon project modelling in FullCAM
  • data analysis, statistics, and spatial modelling in R
  • working within the context of carbon, vegetation and/or biodiversity projects and working knowledge of associated spatial products.
  1. Tertiary qualification (or equivalent training/experience) in GIS, statistics, mathematics, or data science.
  2. Ability to multi-task, managing multiple projects at a time.
  3. Outstanding attention to detail with a desire for excellence.
  4. An innovative, solution-focused approach to problem-solving.
  5. Thrive working in a challenging, fast-paced environment.
  6. A team player who can learn on the job and self-educate, you enjoy new challenges. You are self-motivated and can work on tasks to see them completed on time to high quality, within time constraints.
  7. A familiarity with passion and genuine concern for the agricultural industry and a desire to develop a lasting career in agri-environmental consultancy and make a genuine and meaningful difference with the work you produce (note: an interest in agriculture is essential, and a background in agriculture is highly valued).
  8. On-the-job and formal training will be provided as required, and opportunities may exist to utilise the outcomes from your work to obtain other qualifications.
  9. NOTE: Experience in a consulting context will be highly regarded.
