Role Overview

Purpose:

A DBA (Database Administrator) specializing in RDS (Relational Database Service), and Object-Oriented Cloud is responsible for managing and optimizing database systems in a cloud environment. Their role involves designing, implementing, and maintaining database solutions using RDS platforms, such as Amazon RDS or Microsoft Azure SQL Database. They are responsible for ensuring the performance, availability, and security of the database systems. Key responsibilities of a DBA specializing in RDS, and Object-Oriented Cloud may include:

- Designing and configuring database instances, schemas, tables, and indexes in RDS platforms.

Key competences:

  • Expert experience in implementation and running of a primary database technology (DB2) and familiar with principals applied to other relational database systems (Microsoft SQL/PostgreSQL/MySQL).
  • Demonstrated evidence of technical proficiency with Postgres and exposure to Comvault backup solution.
  • Exposure to Database on Cloud, either Azure or AWS.
  • Experience applying CI/CD automation within the database managed environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relational database design, data modelling, performance monitoring and tuning.
  • Demonstrated experience in use of associated Database programming languages such as PL/SQL, and SQL.
  • Highly developed 'first principles' problem-solving skills, combined with a curious and creative mind-set.
  • Proven analytical and critical thinking capability to interpret a range of data, identify patterns, trends and links that inform judgements and solutions.
  • Demonstrated evidence of technical proficiency in the use of Windows Clustering, Windows Shell Scripting and Unix Korn Shell Scripting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work outside of standard office hours, and on weekends as required.
  • A DBA specializing in RDS, and Object-Oriented Cloud should have a strong understanding of relational database management systems (RDBMS), SQL, database design principles, and cloud computing concepts. They should also be familiar with object-oriented programming languages and frameworks used in cloud-based applications. 
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential for this role to effectively manage and optimize database systems in a cloud environment.

Specific activities required:

  • Install and configure database systems and associated objects, patches and upgrades in response to evolving user requirements or new projects and initiatives.
  • Manage the development, testing and production of database environments.
  • Conduct all aspects of capacity planning, performance monitoring, reporting and tuning of relational databases to optimise operations and mitigate risk of business disruption.
  • Perform backup and recovery of relevant databases on a periodic basis in line with business continuity and contingency plan. 
  • Liaise with application users to confirm requirements for system, backup and other requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of policies and procedures governing Allianz database operations and related issues.
  • Undertake migration of data between nonproduction environments and production applications, employing effective segregation of duties.
  • Implement and audit database security and ensure that data in all environments complies with Allianz Australia Security standards and other regulatory requirements, including but not limited to privacy requirements.
  • Installing, upgrading, and patching database software and related tools.
  • Monitoring and optimizing database performance, including query tuning, index optimization, and resource utilization.
  • Implementing and maintaining database security measures, such as access controls, encryption, and backup and recovery strategies.
  • Collaborating with development teams to design and optimize database schemas and queries for object-Oriented Cloud applications.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving database-related issues, such as performance bottlenecks, data corruption, or connectivity problems.
  • Performing database backups, restores, and disaster recovery planning to ensure data integrity and availability.
  • Implementing and maintaining database monitoring and alerting systems to proactively identify and resolve issues.
  • Keeping up-to-date with the latest database technologies and best practices and evaluating their potential impact on the existing database infrastructure.
  • Providing technical guidance and support to development teams and stakeholders regarding database design, performance optimization, and data modelling.

    • Internal
      • Business Stakeholders: Consult and collaborate with business users to confirm system, backup and other requirements.
      • Project teams: Work with project teams as required to provide database related support to successful delivery of planned objectives.

      • Consultants and Service Providers: Engage with external consultants to deliver projects as required.
