About Us

The School of Indigenous Knowledges (SIK) delivers a multi-disciplinary program that exemplifies best practice in the teaching and learning of Indigenous Knowledges, grounded in local Noongar ways of knowing, doing and being. The School was launched in 2023 and is building its operations across undergraduate and postgraduate program delivery. Being Aboriginal-led and underpinned by the principles of truth-telling and social justice, the School aligns with Murdoch University's commitment to reconciliation. The Dean of Indigenous Knowledges will lead the School and play a key leadership role in the University.

The School of Indigenous Knowledges is co-located with the Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre, Murdoch's leading initiative to increase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation higher education and promotes flexible work arrangements and employee cultural safety.

The Role

The Dean of Indigenous Knowledges position is a unique opportunity for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person to lead the School and play a key leadership role in the University. Using strategic vision, effective management and planning, academic experience and outstanding skills in relationship building, the Dean will play an important role in shaping the future of the School.

As Dean, you will report and work closely with the Pro Vice Chancellor (Head of College) for Law, Arts and Social Sciences (LASS) and build the teaching, research, leadership, and community engagement capabilities of the School. You will maintain important, close partnerships with the University's First Nations communities, including the Pro Vice Chancellor First Nations. You will be an important contributor to other leadership teams in the University, including the strong network of Deans within LASS, and the University's most senior academic governance body, Academic Council.

The Dean supports the delivery of University strategies by managing academic staff and resources of the School; championing and advancing learning and teaching, research, professional activity, and community engagement; developing and instilling a collegiate approach among all staff; and raising the effectiveness and profile of the School within the University and with First Nations and other stakeholders.

While the appointment is for a period of 5 years (which may be extended), it will be supported by the offer of a concurrent, substantive and continuing teaching and research position.

What you'll bring to this role

  • PhD in a relevant discipline or demonstrated equivalent knowledge and/or experience relevant to the position,
  • Demonstrated experience or capability of working meaningfully with First Nations communities,
  • Ability to lead, manage and develop academic staff,
  • A commitment to collegial work practices and the capacity to build strong partnerships with colleagues, academic and administrative units, and external parties,
  • Knowledge of the tertiary education sector, including the tertiary education landscape, academic and administrative processes, legislation, and equity principles,
  • A willingness to lead change, drive sustainable growth in academic programs and enrolments through innovative program design and partnerships,
  • Ability to contribute to the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students as part of a supervision team.
