Dean of Teaching and Learning (Secondary School)

The School is seeking an enthusiastic and innovative educator to join our School as the Dean of Teaching and Learning (Years 7-12). 

This Executive position is responsible for Teaching and Learning in the Secondary School. The role requires leadership of staff and students and the ongoing promotion of a positive school environment and culture. 

Key aspects of this role include the academic development of secondary students including their Teaching and Learning programmes and leadership of academic staff. 

The Dean of Teaching and Learning (7-12) reports to the Deputy Principal and works collaboratively with Associate Principal Operations and the Dean of Students (7-12), whom are the Secondary School Leadership Team. They also work collaboratively with the Middle Leaders in Secondary, being the Heads of Department and Heads of Year. The Dean of Teaching and Learning (7-12) also works closely with the Dean of Teaching and Learning (PK-6). 

Commencing in Term 3, 2024, or later by negotiation, this appointment is full time position (1.0 FTE) with a teaching load of between 0.2 to 0.4 FTE. Initial appointment would be for a period of 5 years. Salary information will be shared upon request. 

This role would suit for a current Head of Department or experienced leader with a passion for Teaching and Learning who is ready to transition to a leadership role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development and implementation of appropriate curriculum pedagogy, assessment and reporting. 
  • Develops measures to effectively track and enhance individual student academic progress, including data analysis.
  • Foster an environment to facilitate collective efficacy; involving teachers in School decision-making, building instructional knowledge and skills, creating opportunities for teachers to collaboratively share skills and experience, interpreting and applying student data.
  • Assist the Deputy Principal with oversight of the staff Professional Reflection and Growth processes. 
  • Organise relief teachers and education assistants when the Relief Coordinator is unavailable.
  • Play a lead role in the development, implementation and ongoing review of the School’s Strategic Plan.
  • Participate as an active member of the School’s Executive Team and attend Department meetings, whole staff meetings, Executive meetings and school functions as necessary. 

 

Essential Selection Criteria

  • Relevant tertiary teaching qualifications or equivalent. 
  • Registration with the Teachers Registration Board of Western Australia. 
  • Proven record as an effective teacher and educational leader in a diverse range of educational settings.
  • Inclusive and open management style being approachable, a good listener, collaborative and an effective communicator.
  • A highly developed capacity to motivate staff, develop their talents and build teams.
  • Fosters positive working relationships, demonstrating emotional intelligence, and excellent interpersonal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to communicate positively and effectively with all members of the School community.
  • Initiative and drive with the ability to lead and manage change.
  • Sound judgement and the ability to make wise decisions and think strategically.
  • Capable and competent financial, organisational and resource management skills and the capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.
  • Ability to interpret school assessment data, set accountability targets and facilitate improvements to drive meaningful results.
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills with the ability to successfully manage a number of diverse tasks in a busy school environment.

 

Desirable Selection Criteria

  • Masters degree or higher. 
  • Previous experience as a Head of Department or similar.
