Deputy Chief Medical Officer

World-class healthcare – Northern Beaches Hospital offers Level 5 delineation services for both public and private patients and features 486 beds, 50-bed Emergency Department, 20-bed general and cardiothoracic ICU, 14 state-of-the-art theatres including cardiac catheter labs, world-class education centre, doctors lounge and excellent staff facilities.

Leading clinicians – NBH is home to some of Australia’s leading clinical specialists and a training ground for the clinicians of the future. NBH boasts a broad range of medical and surgical subspecialties including cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery and robotics, to complex maternity, paediatrics, mental health all supported by excellent emergency and critical care units.

Clinical education – NBH is one of the newest university teaching hospitals in NSW and the Northern Beaches Clinical School is an innovative partnership between NBH and the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences at Macquarie University with a progressive curriculum and integrated postgraduate program. NBH junior medical posts are fully accredited by the NSW Health Education and Training Institute (HETI) and the respective Colleges for training.

Leading research & development – more than 100 PI led and multi-centre clinical trials completed or underway with a vibrant Clinical Trials Unit undertaking a range of Phase 1 and 2 trials.

Strong workforce - More than 1700 staff, 180 junior medical doctors & 700+ senior doctors/visiting Medical Officers.

Strong leadership - Dynamic, innovative and diverse Medical Executive 

The Role 

Northern Beaches Hospital is seeking a dynamic and motivated Deputy Chief Medical Officer with excellent interpersonal skills and a passion for delivering high quality patient care in an innovative model to join our Executive medical team.  The position is responsible for providing leadership and direction to the medical workforce and specialist clinical operations to complement the strategic direction, operational processes, budget and business direction of the Northern Beaches Hospital, including:

  • To manage and lead the junior medical workforce to ensure that patient care is optimised with an engaged, efficient and sustainable workforce;
  • Working with the Chief Medical Officer to shape the medical workforce to align with the operational and strategic needs of the hospital;
  • To provide effective leadership and management of the day-to-day operations and services of the medical workforce and medical workforce unit;
  • Ensure effective engagement of medical staff to encourage collaborative relationships, open discussion, respectful conduct and decision-making empowerment in support of improved patient safety and financial outcomes;
  • Managing compel stakeholder relationships both internally and externally including HETI, the Colleges, Local health Districts and networked Medical Workforce Units; and
  • Actively participating in quality improvement and risk reduction activities, Root Cause Analysis and preparation for Short Notice Accreditation.

The Candidate

Northern Beaches Hospital Deputy Chief Medical Officer is a key leadership opportunity for a committed and enthusiastic medical administrator.  You will help to drive continued clinical improvement across clinical services and enable future growth strategy implementation. You will be target and results driven with a special focus on clinical quality and safety.  Your role will be critical to the future success and growth of hospital services on the Northern Beaches. Your work will help improve health outcomes for the community.

Qualifications and attributes for success:

  • Current Registration with AHPRA as a Medical Practitioner (MBBS or equivalent)
  • Completion or working towards the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators
  • Minimum of 4 years postgraduate experience in a healthcare setting is required.
  • Other management qualifications and/or leadership training
  • Sound clinical decision making and problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills

Selection Criteria

Please ensure you demonstrate your knowledge and experience of the below points as part of your cover letter to be considered:

  1. Demonstrated experience leading and managing staff within a complex department
  2. Demonstrated understanding of the private hospital sector is preferred
  3. Demonstrated high level of competence in interpersonal skills, consultation and effective communication with staff of the hospital including JMO's, VMO/VMPs, professional organisations, medical organisations, medical colleges and universities
