Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions (Executive Contract Officer 4)

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is recruiting an experienced criminal lawyer to work closely with him as his Deputy Director.

In your role as Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions NT you will work under the leadership of Lloyd Babb SC and be a key part of the Senior Executive Team directing all the activities of an independent, professional and effective criminal prosecution service across the NT.

Your key responsibilities will include giving directions to Crown Prosecutors, Office Lawyers and Private Counsel who are working prosecution cases, including how their prosecution case should run, reviewing whether cases should proceed to trial, and when Crown Appeals should be instituted. You will share oversight of the decisions being made in the Office and ensure that the decisions are high quality and always made in accordance with the law, guidelines and policy. You will work to develop and implement changes to systems within the Office to ensure continuous improvement in the quality of decisions and to ensure that optimal decisions are made in a timely way. You will also have the opportunity to recommend changes to legislation.  In appropriate cases you will lead by example and appear as counsel in complex cases in the Supreme Court, the Court of Criminal Appeal, and the High Court.

To be shortlisted it is essential you have been admitted or are eligible for admission as a barrister or solicitor of the High Court or a Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia, have extensive experience in jury trial and/or appellate advocacy, and can demonstrate extensive knowledge and understanding of criminal law.

Exceptional communication skills combined with your strong interpersonal, analytical and management capability and your ability to make sound decisions under pressure will put you in good standing.
