About Kimberley Ports Authority

The Kimberley Ports Authority (KPA) is Based in the town of Broome, Western Australia. The Authority operates the Port of Broome and has the regulatory responsibility for the ports of Derby, Yampi Sound and Wyndham, also in the Kimberley region of WA. KPA employs more than 80 staff delivering a diverse range of operational and administrative services. 

The Role:

Reporting to the Harbour Master, this position is an integral role in the organisation and requires a high performing maritime professional who is passionate about working for a purpose-led organisation. The role requires regular non-business hours work, periodic on call requirements outside of office hours and travel. 

It is broadly responsible for assisting with the management of navigation, pilotage, towage and conservancy for the Ports of Broome, Derby, Wyndham and Yampi Sound and ensuring safe and efficient marine operations and compliance with maritime safety, security, environmental and other legislative obligations of the KPA.

In this ‘hands on’ role your responsibilities will be diverse and will include, but not limited to:

  • Contribute to management of Shipping in a safe and efficient manner;
  • Development of strategic and operational plans and policies; 
  • Maintenance of navigational aids and other marine assets/equipment; 
  • Emergency Response and Risk Management in the Marine Environment; 
  • Effective management of vessel vetting and Marine incident investigations.
  • Management and supervision of Marine Projects, as assigned; 
  • Assist with the management of Port Security in accordance with port procedures and Dept of Home affairs requirements; 
  • Supporting the development of new business opportunities and efficiency initiatives. 

About You:

You will share a passion for our purpose and be aligned to our core values. In addition, you will hold/demonstrate: 

  • Master Class 1 Certificate (current or expired).
  • MSIC - Maritime Security Card (or eligibility to obtain).
  • C class motor vehicle licence.
  • International Harbourmaster Diploma is desirable.
  • Training in oil spill management is desirable.
  • Training in Incident investigation is desirable.
  • PSO/PFSO certification is desirable.
  • Strong current knowledge of maritime transport, safety and environmental legislation in Western Australian and Australian waters.
  • Proven success in a similar role within a Port or related Maritime environment.
  • Knowledge of, and proven ability to manage marine operational aspects including pilotage, towage, Port security and emergency response.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills (verbal & written).
  • Good conceptual thinking and analytical ability.
  • Knowledge of risk management techniques and processes.

The role is Based in Broome and will require regular travel to other areas in the Kimberley. Please consider the realities of living and working in a remote area prior to application if you are considering relocation.
