Project Overview:

Bechtel, a global leader in project management, engineering, procurement and construction, has been engaged to undertake a Feasibility Study through to EPCM construction and commissioning by one of our key clients. This Project involves greenfields and brownfields developments including earthworks through challenging terrain, construction of new crushing facilities, and transmission line installations.

Job Summary:

In this role, you will lead a team as a Deputy Project Manager to develop goals, milestones, priorities, metrics, and execution plans. Your team will monitor customer feedback, compliance, and project performance, ensuring that safety and sustainability goals are integrated. Your innovative recommendations for high quality work will help ensure customer satisfaction and will support new business development. 

Major Responsibilities:

  • As Deputy Project Manager, you will have demonstrated leadership abilities to build and lead cohesive package delivery teams that include multiple contractors to deliver the project objectives.
  • You will define and communicate roles, responsibilities and authorities to package delivery team members/partners to ensure project completion in a safe manner, within budget, on schedule and in conformance with the appropriate standards, specifications and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • You will ensure scope, design basis and objectives are defined, best practices/lessons learned reviewed, detailed work plans, schedules, budgets and procedures are established and coordinated with others, including: the plan for addressing critical cross-functional and cross-package work processes and systems, etc.
  • You will obtain concurrence by the members of the project team and functional management and promote the use of constructability reviews during project execution.
  • You will monitor contractual commitments to ensure that all work is being performed in accordance with the specifications and terms of the contract, and that change orders and claims are processed in a timely manner.
  • You will maintain the project change management control system.
  • You will drive with the project team the communication, implementation, update and continual use of the Project Execution Plan.
  • Reviews project control systems which measure progress/performance, provide early warning of deviations from Plan, and identify corrective actions to be taken.
  • You will identify quality requirements and ensure the proper processes are identified and implemented to achieve contractual quality commitments and assess customer perception of quality on a regular periodic basis.
  • You will support the training of new Package Managers and other project team members as required, through both formal training courses and on-the-job training.
  • You will lead periodic project meetings consistent with the contract to promote and facilitate communication, review progress/performance, discuss issues and facilitate problem resolution. Document turnover activities and obtain final acceptance of work.
  • You will be accountable for assigned main works packages and ensure contractual correspondence with the customer is documented.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Member of a relevant professional body with chartered status and/or educated to degree level.
  • Demonstrated experience in the successful management of major projects in the construction and engineering industries.
  • Experienced in determining how to best de-risk major projects with complex interfaces.
  • Demonstrated commercial focus and financially astute.
  • Knowledge of the principles of health & safety, quality and environment legislation and best practice.
  • Known for high level of interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrable delivery of leadership and behavioural change within a large organisation and with outside organis

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of industry best practice policies, procedures and programs including safety and quality.
  • Knowledge of industry, technology and construction work processes.
  • Knowledge and understanding of standard project management/reporting tools, techniques and procedures including:
  • Project Controls Estimates and resource loaded schedules
  • Progress and performance curves and metrics
  • Financial management
  • Baseline development and implementation including automation
  • Reports and action items tracking

Demonstrated commercial awareness including:

  • Cash flow management
  • Knowledge and experience in contracts formulation, risk analysis, negotiations, and implementation including:
  • Change control and documentation management
  • Cost trend program and its linkage to change control
  • The hierarchy of requirements documents in case of conflict (RFP, Proposal, Contract, etc.)
