What you’ll do

The Supreme Court of New South Wales is the highest court in New South Wales and hears civil, criminal, and appellate matters.  The Supreme Court is responsible for the administration of justice in New South Wales.

An opportunity has opened in the registry for a legally qualified person to be appointed as a Deputy Registrar.  The Deputy Registrar has been delegated power by the Chief Justice to:

  • assess and determine probate applications;
  • determine chamber applications, for example, the enforcement of judgments, granting leave to issue subpoenas, making orders for substituted service, registering foreign judgments;
  • sit in court to conduct examinations under the Corporations Act 2001, Criminal Assets Recovery Act 1900, Evidence on Commission Act 1995; and

The Deputy Registrar also sits as the Duty Registrar to provide procedural information to litigants, the legal profession and registry staff.

What we’re looking for

The successful applicant will:

  • be self-motivated, have an eye for detail and be an energetic person with a can-do attitude;
  • preferably have litigation experience and strong academics;
  • be the kind of person who acts with high levels of integrity, and has a desire to be involved in the administration of justice; and
  • be prepared to see more applications for probate in one day than would be seen by practitioners in a lifetime of practice!

Essential requirements:

  • be admitted as a legal practitioner in NSW (or another State or Territory within Australia);
  • have an understanding of the Supreme Court Act 1970, Civil Procedure Act 2005, related rules and practice and procedure;
  • have an ability to interpret and apply legislation;
  • be able to work autonomously and complete a high volume of work in a short period of time; and
  • be willing to attend the registry in-person each weekday (i.e. working from home is not applicable).
