- Legal Officer IV, base salary ($134,483 - $137,071), plus employer's contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading
Your role
The Supreme Court of New South Wales is the highest court in New South Wales and hears civil, criminal, and appellate matters. The Supreme Court is responsible for the administration of justice in New South Wales.
You will be self-motivated, have an eye for detail and aspirations to build a great legal career by learning all that justice has to offer. You will be an energetic person with a can-do attitude. You will preferably have litigation experience and strong academics. You are the kind of person who acts with high levels of integrity, and you will have a desire to be involved in the administration of justice. The right person must be resilient to deal with the kind of matters that come before the Supreme Court and be the kind of person who can make accurate decisions based upon evidence put before the Court.
The types of matters that come before the Supreme Court may give rise to exposure to sensitive and at times confronting material. Potential candidates are encouraged as part of the recruitment process to make enquiries regarding any potential psychosocial hazards that they may be exposed to as part of this role.
What you'll do
An exciting opportunity has opened in the registry for a legally qualified person to be appointed as a Senior Deputy Registrar. This is a generalist role as Senior Deputy Registrars have been delegated power by the Chief Justice to:
- determine probate applications.
- conduct examinations under the Corporations Act 2001, Criminal Assets Recovery Act 1900, Evidence on Commission Act 1995
- manage the return of subpoena list.
- conduct mediations under the court-annexed mediation scheme.
- sit in court as an acting registrar to conduct directions hearings and to hear interlocutory applications when needed.
- determine chamber applications, for example, the enforcement of judgments, granting leave to issue subpoenas, making orders for substituted service.
- provide procedural information to registry staff, litigants, and practitioners; and
- exercise the statutory functions of the Manager, Costs Assessment.
Please note that due to the nature of the duties involved in the role, the expectation is that the role is primarily an in-person one which will require the successful candidate to substantially perform the duties of the role in the Supreme Court premises at Queens Square in the CBD.
What we're looking for
- be admitted as a legal practitioner in NSW.
- have at least five years post admission experience as a lawyer in NSW.
- demonstrated highly developed legal skills and capabilities (advocacy experience is desirable).
- sound knowledge and understanding of the Supreme Court Act 1970, Civil Procedure Act 2005, related rules and practice and procedure.
- have an ability to interpret and apply legislation; and
- be able to work autonomously and complete a high volume of work in a short period of time.
Essential requirements
- Legal qualifications and extensive post admission experience as a lawyer in NSW.
- Demonstrated highly developed legal skills and capabilities, including in advocacy work.
- Sound knowledge of all relevant rules, legislation and practice and procedure in the NSW Court system.
- Commitment to mediation principles and willingness to achieve mediation accreditation.
