This is a 5 year fixed term full time appointment.

About the role

We are searching for a dynamic and experienced senior solicitor to lead our Public & General Litigation (PGL) Legal Section at the State Solicitor’s Office (SSO). The Deputy State Solicitor PGL is responsible for the performance of a Section, their outputs and the delivery of dispute resolution services to Government.

You will have the highest degree of legal ability in conducting highly complex and sensitive litigation and in providing high level legal advice.

You will be an experienced leader who has the capacity to coordinate at the highest level multiple legal functions’ outputs and the delivery of legal services.

You will have strong interpersonal skills, superior communication skills and the ability to contribute to the collegiate and supportive work environment of the Office. Reporting to the State Solicitor you will strategically partner with other senior members of the Corporate Executive to shape the future direction of the Office.

The SSO is the Western Australian Government’s principal legal adviser. The Office enables government action, manages the State’s legal risk, and supports the First Law Officer with authoritative advice on key legal issues. The work of the State Solicitor’s Office delivers demonstrably better government decisions, strengthens the rule of law, and leads to greater community trust in the public sector. The State Solicitor’s Office is a centre of legal excellence committed to the highest standards of service and professionalism.

Legal Services provided by the SSO include the provision of legal advice; the preparation of legal documents; the conduct of litigation; and representation as counsel in courts and tribunals. The Office provides these services in a cost effective and timely way, consistent with maintaining legal excellence and integrity in the Government’s legal dealings.

Legal Sections include Civil Litigation; Public & General Litigation; State Counsel; Advise, Policy & Public Law; Native Title & State Lands and Commercial.

Employment conditions

This position is under the Salaries and Allowance Determination – Special Division and Prescribed Office Holders No.1 2023. Office holders listed are entitled to the same terms and conditions as contained in the Public Service Award 1992 and the Public Sector CSA Agreement 2022 and is inclusive of annual leave loading.

A private lease car or allowance in lieu is available to office holders.

Salary packaging is available.

The term will be for a five year fixed term contract and to be eligible for appointment, applicants must be Australian citizens or have permanent residency status.

A current permanent WA Public Sector employee will elect to forego permanency to take up this position and will not be entitled to a right of return under section 58 of the Public Sector Management Act 1994.
