Job Title: Development Editor

Location: Chiswick, Greater London

About the role

The Development Editor is responsible for the assessment and development of national and client sponsored standards and standardization documents. They ensure that the document realises its scope and presents the content in the most effective way, meeting the needs of users and other external stakeholders.

The role works in partnership with Editorial Project Managers in the Content Development team and

supports the editorial quality of standards and standardization documents. The Development Editor is responsible for the editorial governance of the document. An awareness of the wider risk management associated with standards development will be essential in order to apply the governance appropriately.

The role will suit candidates with a proven ability to assess and analyse the purpose of a publication and develop an outline and structure that achieves its goals. Strong editorial and rewriting skills and an ability to critically analyse technical content are at the core of this role. It is also important to demonstrate excellent communication skills, as well as the ability to collaborate, persuade, and influence, to manage author and stakeholder relationships.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver client and stakeholder value by providing high-quality standardization documents, consistent with BSI's reputation as a credible independent standards development facilitator.
  • Apply and advise project stakeholders on editing and standards drafting rules, through the critical analysis of technical content, use of editorial and rewriting skills, and application of standards development knowledge.
  • Review, assess, and edit draft domestic standards using a thorough knowledge of editing and standards drafting rules, as appropriate carrying out a gap analysis of content against scope.
  • Provide clear and constructive feedback on drafts to strengthen the structure and content of the standards and work collaboratively with authors and drafting panels to implement edits.
  • Effectively manage relationships with external stakeholders and project suppliers, such as technical author, PAS steering group, Flex advisory group, and BSI Technical Committees and drafting panels.
  • Effectively manage workload so that work is completed according to the project schedule.

To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • Extensive experience in technical editing and rewriting
  • Demonstrable, hands-on experience in developing and editing market-focused publications.
  • Excellent command of the English language
  • Attention to detail, quality control, and an ability to engage with content on a detailed level.
  • Experience in managing multiple projects and stakeholders.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, including prioritisation.
  • Excellent technical editing skills, with the ability to draft content with technical experts.
  • Ability to help authors present complex information in a practical manner compliant with BSI's drafting rules
  • Ability to communicate constructive criticism sensitively and confidently to authors.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects to tight deadlines.
