About the Company

The Carpentaria Shire Council is located on the Savannah Way in Northwest Queensland.  The Shire itself covers an area of nearly 65,000 sq km with a population of 2,000.  The regions two main centres are the towns of Karumba, a beautiful fishing village and Normanton the hub of the region.

About the Role

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, you will implement councils’ economic plan, policies and programs which drive growth in jobs, investment, and prosperity in the Shire. You will provide guidance in Economic Development to external and internal stakeholders including the establishment of strategic partnerships between government and the private sector. You will also be an advocate for business investment and economic growth.  

Your role will also require a deep understanding of issues that face small businesses and an understanding of investment attraction around growth and relocation from medium to large businesses. 

You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders. Additionally, you must be a self-starter, with the ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects effectively.

Responsibilities: 

  • Economic development of the Region including marketing, tourism, events, and functions.
  • Community development and delivery of Carpentaria Shire’s Youth Strategy.
  • Community services including the operation of Council’s libraries and oversight of its childcare centre.
  • Oversighting the management of the Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre.
Skills and Experience required
  • Tertiary qualifications in either business, economic development, Tourism and community engagement. and advanced qualifications in a management field would be highly desirable.
  • Experience in Community Consultation and working with small business, would be favoured.
  • A high level of communication skills across a broad range of stakeholders and evidence of effective collaboration and facilitation.
  • Experience within government or business enterprises which demonstrate experience in economic development desirable but not essential.
