Job description

The Australian Committee for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (ACIUCN) is an incorporated, not-for-profit organisation founded over 40 years ago to provide a focus for local Member organisations of IUCN to advance the network’s global mission (‘For a just world that values and conserves nature’) and programme in Australia.
The committee achieves this by:

  • Providing a neutral forum for Australian members of IUCN to stimulate cooperative effort, raise awareness, develop national policy advice and key publications, and share knowledge and ideas.
  • Partnering with the Australian IUCN network to provide expert advisory capacity to contribute to the development and implementation of broader regional and global environmental goals, conservation frameworks, processes and policies.
  • Delivering and partnering on collaborative projects and new initiatives to achieve tangible outcomes that contribute to the delivery of identified conservation priorities in Australia.
  • Helping to promote and facilitate the implementation of IUCN’s recommendations, tools and conservation frameworks in Australia.
  • Helping to meet national and global environmental communications goals by raising awareness of the benefits and importance of biodiversity and nature-based solutions for meeting societal needs.
  • Building and maintaining a strong IUCN network in Australia.
  • Providing a vital link between IUCN and its Australian members to encourage involvement and collaboration around the network’s global and regional activities, commissions and programmes.
Position purpose
This position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day running of the Australian Committee for IUCN Incorporated, developing and implementing ACIUCN’s work programme, governing the organisation, and building cooperative and constructive partnerships between the committee’s members and IUCN commission partnerships, under the broad direction of the ACIUCN Board.
ACIUCN is a small organisation with only two part-time staff, both of whom work from home. This role requires regular and ongoing communication with the project coordinator and key members of the Board.
  • Salary approx. $90,000-100,000 (full-time equivalent, wage negotiable depending on experience)
  • Part-time (approx. 0.5 FTE) salary to be pro-rata). Permanent employment.

Key Responsibilities * Organisation Management and Building
  • Develop and implement ACIUCN’s strategy and annual work program in consultation with ACIUCN Board and Project Coordinator.
  • Lead, manage and work in partnership with ACIUCN Project Coordinator to develop and implement ACIUCN Work Program
  • Grow the Australian IUCN membership network.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with key government, ENGO and university stakeholders.
  • Attract new funding and diversify ACIUCN’s funding streams.
  • Outreach and communications:
  • Oversee the Project Coordinator role to maintain and develop the ACIUCN website and other online communication platforms.
  • Work with the Project Coordinator to develop and implement a communications plan to inform and engage members and other target audiences
  • Prepare briefing papers and reports for members and other stakeholders.
  • Represent the principles and program of the ACIUCN through public speaking events.
  • Event management
  • Work with Project Coordinator to organise high-level online and face-to-face events to facilitate networking and policy discussion across government, ENGOs, universities and other relevant sectors.
  • Harness resources for event management, drawing on members, volunteers and other sources.
  • Admin and governance
  • Implement sound organisational and governance practices.
  • Manage the accounting and finances of ACIUCN (including annual budget) consistent with legal requirements.
  • Coordinate ACIUCN Board meetings and member meetings, including organising the ACIUCN annual general meeting and other ordinary member meetings.
  • Implement the decisions of the ACIUCN and ACIUCN Board.
  • Manage any other ACIUCN staff, including contractors or volunteers.
Key Performance Indicators
Key Performance Indicators will be identified in the Director’s annual workplan with progress towards achievement of the measures monitored by the ACIUCN Board.
Key Selection Criteria * Staff Management: Experience working from home, leading and working collaboratively with geographically separated staff.
  • Initiative and Accountability: Works effectively with a high degree of autonomy and accountability; self-motivated with the demonstrated ability to take initiative; commitment to ACIUCN’s vision, mission and values.
  • Relationship-building and Stakeholder management: Advanced skills in relationship-building and networking; ability to coordinate with members working on different issues across multiple locations. Ability to build mutually beneficial partnerships to ensure outcomes are achieved and finds innovative solutions to resolve stakeholder issues.
  • Communication: High-level communication skills, with the ability to identify and understand the needs of different target audiences and develop communications that resonate; ability to monitor the success of communications and refine accordingly and effectively use communication platforms (such as social media and video-conferencing)
  • Project management: High-level project management skills with the ability to consult, liaise with and influence stakeholders, produce detailed project plans, monitor performance against objectives and manage project risks and issues.
  • Operational Management: Experience in small business management and administration:
  • Ability to manage and organise high-level, engaging events.
  • Ability to prepare and manage budgets.
  • Ability to oversee financial resources and management of CRM (membership details)
  • Understanding of requirements of governance reports (e.g. ATO and ACNC)
  • Qualifications, technical knowledge and skills:
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the Australian conservation movement, environmental issues, and public policy and political decision-making processes.
  • Has a broad professional network which includes ENGOs, government agencies and universities and a demonstrated capacity to cultivate and grow these to meet ACIUCN objectives.
  • High level of IT expertise (Microsoft365; Video Conferencing apps).
  • Tertiary qualifications in conservation, policy, natural resource management or related fields is highly desirable.
