Job description

The Director of Athletics will work closely with the President, SUAC Committee and Sydney Uni Sport to provide leadership, strategy, vision and inspiration across the whole of SUAC; acting as custodian of their values, while driving the elements of culture that include elite performance - on and off the track.

The Director will have overall responsibility for the execution of SUAC’s key activities which align to the club’s strategic plan. The activities are to be undertaken, while simultaneously being the lead ambassador and key link between athletes, SUSF, alumni and other stakeholders. They will have the overall responsibility for influencing, implementing and overseeing the strategic direction of the Club and enhancement of the University experience through engagement and participation.

The role as Director enables an individual to impact the lives of a key cohort of Australia’s best athletes in addition to providing a platform to grow and impact many others, whilst leveraging the programs and facilities of Sydney University Sport. This role provides an opportunity for the Director to build a reputation for helping athletes to achieve their goals, at any level, of any ability.

This is a full-time role working flexible work hours, as the job involves engagement with athletes, coaches, training and competition, all of which happen at varying times, often out of normal business hours. The workload varies over the calendar year, averaging a minimum of 38 hours per week.

You will be involved in:

  • Providing a platform of support for Sydney Uni athletes - students, club and elite.
  • Promoting SUAC in the broader athletics community, inspiring current athletes to participate in key events and initiatives to a high standard, and identify and proactively engage with potential athletes with the view to have them become club members.
  • Be primarily responsible for the key events in the SUAC calendar, including (but not limited to) - UniSport Nationals, Athletics Australia Nationals, Athletics NSW events, European competition, end of year dinner.
  • Leading the campus fun run/interfaculty run ‘RUNSYDUNI’ including lead up training sessions aimed at engaging the student USYD community with support from SUSF and SUAC.
  • Running a high performance Elite Athlete Program which supports athletes domestically and internationally.
  • Drafting Student Services Amenities Fees contestable funding allotment applications.

What you will need to do to be successful:

  • Inspire and provide support to all SUAC athletes;
  • Run regular training sessions for the core SUAC training group, currently 3 days per week;
  • Ensure our competition management is well organised and undertaken successfully;
  • Facilitate our Elite Athlete Program;
  • Ensure that key SUAC events are facilitated successfully;
  • Own the RUNSYDUNI event managing relationships with key stakeholders and delivering the event;
  • Working collaboratively with the SUAC President and SUAC Committee;
  • Facilitate a strong and positive working relationship with SUSF and the SUSF Sports department;
  • In conjunction with SUAC committee, ensure SUAC is compliant with SUSF, Athletics Australia and Athletics NSW policies, procedures and regulations;
  • Engage positively with Alumni to ensure that SUACs donor body remains actively engaged with the club and grows.

What we expect you to bring to the role:

  • A passion for developing, inspiring and helping track & field and cross country/road athletes achieve their goals.
  • Demonstrated track record and passion for developing athletes.
  • Demonstrated study in Sport Science, Management or another relevant area of study at at least a bachelors degree level.
  • Athletic coaching qualifications - Athletics Australia  level 2 qualification or equivalent (or higher).
  • A working understanding of university sport.
  • previous experience in  administration and management.
  • A track record of successfully delivering projects or initiatives at an organisational level.
  • An ability to identify and deliver upon strategic opportunities, both independently or as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Experience with managing stakeholders.

  • Delivery of initiatives agreed upon in the clubs strategic plan.
