  • Employment Type: Part Time (2 days per week, 0.4 FTE)
  • Duration: 3 years Fixed Term Contract
  • Remuneration: Circa $74,000 Total Financial Reward Package per annum (incl. Super)
  • Location: Flexible work from any location in Australia

Open Access Australasia (OAA) is a member organisation of 23 Australian universities, 8 New Zealand universities and seven affiliate organisations. The purpose is to support social equity through the provision of Open Access (OA) to research outputs via advocacy, collaboration, raising awareness and leading and building capacity activities. It is hosted at UNSW by UNSW Library.

Open Access Australasia works closely with stakeholders including the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) and the Council of New Zealand University Librarians (CONZUL). Both are peak national bodies that represent academic libraries in Australia and Aotearoa.   OAA supports and advises on the development of institutional, national and international governance frameworks, service and infrastructure to facilitate the broadest possible access to research outputs.

Why Your Role Matters:

As the Director of Open Access Australasia, you will be expected to lead the development of strategy and directing activities to ensure the goals of the group are met for open scholarship in Australasia. The Director of Open Access Australasia works under the broad direction of the Executive Committee of Open Access Australasia and has three major roles:

  1. Makes a major contribution to the development and implementation of Open Access policies and practices across Australasia, specifically in publicly funded Australasian research institutions, through a range of activities.
  2. Advises, supports and, where appropriate, drives the development of national approaches to open scholarship.
  3. Represents the interests and needs of Australasian institutions and other bodies at relevant global initiatives.

The role of Director Open Access Australasia reports to both the Chair of the Executive Open Access Australasia and to the Director & University Librarian UNSW and has up to two direct reports.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Provide transformative leadership and advocacy for open scholarship in Australasia on behalf of members.
  • Lead Open Access Australasia to grow its membership and develop and implement enhanced member services/benefits.
  • Lead and coordinate the day-to-day direction and operations of Open Access Australasia including professional development; staffing and recruitment; service management; marketing; budget and finance and planning.
  • Advise on policy development, capacity building and other activity to support open scholarship work at member institutions in Australia and New Zealand (e.g. workshops, policy advice, invited talks).
  • Represent members in national and international fora and consultations.

Who You Are:

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Postgraduate qualifications with substantial, relevant experience or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Proven expertise, leadership, and influence, nationally and internationally on Open Access and scholarly communication including on issues surrounding academic publishing, research data, peer review, integrity, reproducibility, citation, equity, data sovereignty, publishing and impact,
  • High level interpersonal, negotiation and change management skills including demonstrated experience in:
    • developing and influencing the policy agenda in scholarly communications within university and national policy environments
    • advocacy and contributions to the professional and research community through publications, conference presentations, panels, media releases and other engagement
    • raising awareness of open scholarship issues and developments amongst a broad range of stakeholders at all levels
    • influencing significant change through collaboration across a range of organisations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and build capacity for open scholarship through skills development and training programs for member organisations, the research and information professions and amongst the research community.
  • Demonstrated well developed leadership and management skills applied to the operation of not-for-profits with Boards.
  • Demonstrated high level written and oral communication skills, including confidence in public speaking and other media skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity to think and act strategically, drawing on information from multiple sources.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and to work independently to deliver high level objectives to meet conflicting demands and deadlines in a changeable work environment with a range of stakeholders.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
