Job description

Director - Policy & Regulation Lead - Energy Industry
About Baringa:
We set out to build the world's most trusted consulting firm - creating lasting impact for clients and pioneering a positive, people-first way of working. We work with everyone from FTSE 100 names to bright new start-ups, in every sector.
You'll find us collaborating shoulder-to-shoulder with our clients, from the big picture right down to the detail: helping them define their strategy, deliver complex change, spot the right commercial opportunities, manage risk, or bring their purpose and sustainability goals to life. Our clients love how we get to know what makes their organisations tick - slotting seamlessly into their teams and being proudly geeky about solving their challenges.
As a Certified B Corporation®, we've proven that we've built social and environmental good into every bit of what we do.
We have hubs in Europe, the US, Asia and Australia, and we work all around the world - from a wind farm in Wyoming to a boardroom in Berlin. Find us wherever there's a challenge to be tackled and an impact to be made.
Our Policy & Regulatory practice are looking for an experienced consulting Director to join the team in Sydney or Melbourne.
Our leading practice in Australia offers our clients an unparalleled combination of energy market expertise, policy and regulatory experience and commercial insight. We are proud to work with the foremost policymakers, regulators, investors, developers, lenders and energy companies operating globally across the energy supply chain. Led by a Senior Management Team respected as Thought Leaders within the industry, we help our clients shape, define and implement change in energy markets.
What you will be doing

  • You will be trusted by senior stakeholders in the government, market and regulatory bodies, investors, developers, energy utilities, and industry players across the energy supply chain.
  • You will lead consulting engagements - using your expertise to scope projects, manage junior team members and build client relationships to have a lasting impact on the teams you work with.
  • You will build relationships with existing and prospective clients, working as a leader in our team to prioritise and lead business development activities.
Examples of some recent projects include:
  • Advising clients on the extent of competition in the wholesale electricity spot and contract markets plus ways to improve the workability and effectiveness of competition in these markets.
  • Advising on the economic and business case for offshore wind in the NEM, and the enabling network, plus the regulatory and commercial frameworks required to deliver an industry at scale
  • Explaining the pros and cons of transmission network access reform to clients, including moving to bespoke firm-access regimes to incentivise new renewables to locate in specific geographic areas ('renewable energy zones')
  • Advising market bodies, governments, and market participants on the different means, and associated costs and benefits, by which to better integrate consumer energy resources into the power system, including the introduction of distribution network-level markets and distribution network tariff reform.
  • Assisting with the setting of regulated retail tariffs (Default Market Offer, Victorian Default Offer), and the potential implications (intended and unintended) of setting these too high or too low.
  • Working on projects related to the NEM's retail market, wholesale market, transmission networks or distribution networks.
Your skills and experience
  • You hold demonstrable consulting experience within the energy sector advising on Policy & Regulation.
  • You are familiar with advising on electricity sector policies, and passionate about addressing the challenges of the rapidly changing electricity sector.
  • Your passion for solving some of the most critical and tricky problems will be clear to all who work with you. You will be able to lead and coach small teams to deliver high-impact results within a fast-paced environment.
  • You possess an entrepreneurial mindset and are passionate about being part of our culture and building a team, in a rapidly growing environment. You are just as passionate about your own development, and that of your team, as you are about the industry.
  • You have policy experience in the NEM in at least one of the following areas: wholesale markets, retail markets, transmission networks, or distribution networks.
  • You have direct experience working or interacting with the NEM's market bodies (AEMC, AEMO, AER), regulators (ACCC, IPART, ESCV), and/or government energy agencies (State / Commonwealth)

In addition to this, we have introduced our 5-Year Recharge benefit which allows all employees an additional 2 weeks of paid leave after 5 years continuous service.
