This is a permanent part-time (0.92FTE) position commencing Term 2, 2024 

North Harrisdale Primary School is seeking an innovative and motivated Education Assistant – Auslan to join our dynamic team.

As an Education Assistant - Auslan you would carry out activities within or outside the classroom to facilitate communication between Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, their peers, teachers and staff members. You would work with teaching staff in the delivery of their planned education programs to ensure that Deaf and Hard of Hearing students can access their learning programs, including meeting Individual Education Plan goals. Ideally the Education Assistant – Auslan would have experience working with students with disabilities.

The successful applicant will ideally have a passion for working with students with special needs and be committed to maximising their impact on student learning. You should have high expectations and truly believe that all students can learn and be successful in a supportive and inclusive learning environment. You will ideally embrace evidence-based strategies in place across the school to meet the needs of students.

Experience in synthetic phonics, literacy and numeracy intervention programs, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices will be highly regarded.

We are seeking an enthusiastic team member who shows initiative in adapting tasks to meet student needs. You will ideally contribute advice and expertise, collaborating with staff to support student achievement. Under teacher direction, you will assist in the delivery of planned education programs and encouraging a supportive and inclusive learning environment. An ability to work with students in out-of-class activities, during breaks in the school day, and on school excursions is advantageous.

We are seeking an enthusiastic team member who is committed to building their professional capacity through continuous professional learning, self-reflection and engaging in initiatives that support improved practice. Staff in our school attend weekly after-school meetings for whole school development, planning, data analysis and professional learning. We also have fun together!

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Well developed oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with Deaf or Hard of Hearing students, liaise with parents, teachers and community members and where necessary assist teachers in understanding students.
  • Well developed organisational skills, including the ability to contribute to a professional team and deliver an effective education program.
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues relevant to deaf or hard of hearing students.

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
