SMYL Community College is a referral only ‘Curriculum and Re-engagement in Education' (CaRE) School that caters specifically for students who have disengaged from mainstream education. The College offers a full-time alternative education programme under the School Education Act 1999 (WA) for 12 to 18 year olds.
All students referred to the College have significant barriers to education as a result of diagnosed and undiagnosed mental health and other disabilities – social-emotional, sensory, intellectual, learning and physical. Teaching and learning is adjusted, and support services provided, to meet students’ needs. A collaborative case management model is a key component of the College operations. Teachers and other professional staff work together to find the most appropriate learning pathway for every student.
The campus is located in Mandurah. SMYL has other campuses in Fremantle, Medina, Rockingham and Cockburn. Successful candidates should possess a willingness to work at a range of campuses, depending on organisational requirements.
The College is seeking an Education Assistant, experienced at working with at-risk students in small groups and one-to-one. The successful candidate will ideally be experienced in working with youth presenting with mental health issues.
The Education Assistant, working as part of a case management team, will be expected to independently supervise and monitor students, assist teachers and trainers to develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs), support literacy and numeracy activities and encourage student engagement in classroom/workshop activities.
Education Assistants will be expected to:
- Know students and how they learn
- Know what and how to teach
- Collaborate with teachers to plan for and implement effective teaching and learning
- Contribute to maintaining a safe and engaging learning environment
- Contribute to assessment, providing feedback and reporting on student progress
- Engage in professional learning
- Engage professionally with colleagues, parents, carers and community
Qualifications for the position:
- A Certificate IV in Education Support or equivalent; and
- A current Working with Children Check.
