Appointment Pool

Burbridge School is seeking to establish a pool of Special NeedsEducation Assistants for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2025. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2024 school year, up to the end of Term 1, 2025.

Burbridge School is seeking experienced, qualified, enthusiastic, and dedicated professionals to support teachers and key stakeholders in the education of students with special educational needs, from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Suitable applicants will, with teacher direction and limited supervision, assist in the delivery of planned education programs, including the operation of computers and digital technologies; implement individual or small group programs or demonstrations and be able to provide valuable feedback to support student learning. They will support students with emotional regulation and social emotional development with positive behaviour support practices and effective use of augmentative and alternative communication systems. They will assist with the preparation and maintenance of the learning environment by maintaining equipment, materials, and resources, for use in classes, displays and demonstration; and assist the teacher with clean and safe storage of items after classes and activities.

Suitable applicants will be required to support with the care and supervision of students in all aspects of the curriculum such as out-of-class activities, swimming/hydrotherapy, school excursions, manual handling, workplace learning, further education opportunities, and recreation.

Suitable applicants will ideally work across classrooms, so flexibility is highly desirable. They should be an active team member within the school promoting independence opportunities and effectively support staff teams to ensure students achieve their individual education program objectives. They will ideally assist with the general health and wellbeing of students, including but not limited to, Epilepsy and seizure management.

Applicants should be highly motivated, energetic, physically fit, and possess the qualities to promote excellence. They will be part of an effective team and support innovative curriculum. They should also ideally show excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills, and the ability to work in a highly collaborative manner in promoting a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Applicants should also be committed to self-education and building their knowledge to ensure the delivery of effective programs that extend and value the diversity of all students. Applicants should be willing to actively contribute to whole school initiatives and committees.

Burbridge School is situated 15 km north of Perth in Koondoola. To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Effective written and oral communication skills, including report writing and the ability to effectively interact with students with Special Needs, and liaise with parents, teachers and community members and assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to contribute to a professional team and provide advice and evaluation in the development of the education program, including special education and therapy programs where they have been implemented.
  • Ability to assist professionals in the implementation and evaluation of education programs, including special education and, if required, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist with the general health and well being of students.

ELIGIBILITY AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment.
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement.
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter.
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
