Established in 1889 as a leading comprehensive school for the education of boys, Shore welcomed girls to the Early Learning Centre and K, 1, 2 Preparatory School at its Northbridge Campus in 2003. The Educational Development Psychologist will work closely with the School Counselling Team and other key staff who monitor the pastoral care and academic progress of students in providing counselling services for students, support for parents, teachers and the School Executive to reach the best possible outcomes for students.
This is a permanent part time role in the Senior School reporting to the Head of Counselling.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Assessment of students with academic, social, emotional and behavioural difficulties as is suitable within a school-based psychological service.
- Clinically supports and manages students at risk, liaising with emergency services and/or other government mandated services, family, other key stakeholders and service providers in the care and protection of individual students where needed.
- Works closely and liaises with other key staff involved in the pastoral care and academic progress of students including the Deputy Head – Pastoral, Academic Support Team, Year Coordinators, Housemasters, Head of Boarding Houses, Tutors, Class Teachers, Health Centre Staff and the School Chaplin to ensure appropriate intervention, care and support for students.
- Supports student, parents and carers to access appropriate supports withing the school environment and/or external intervention and support services according to individual needs.
- Liaises and consults with external health care providers in relation to the ongoing care and management of a student at school within appropriate confidentiality guidelines.
- Assessment of any concerns around risk of safety; development and implementation of safety plans to support students at risk. Work collaboratively with parents and external professionals in the management of students at risk.
- Contributes to research and the production of resources for the school community as needed.
- Adheres to and complies with the School’s Policies and Procedures for Critical Incident management within the School community.
- Providing advice on appropriate classroom strategies to support a student’s access to learning where appropriate based on their psychological needs.
- Participates where possible in the life of the School and School Community
- Supports and participates in the Christian ethos of the School.
Experience/Qualifications:
- A minimum of five years’ experience in a school setting or mental health environment.
- Appropriate qualifications in Psychology
- Well-developed psychometric skills. The ability to administer and interpret psychometric assessments (including WISC-V and WIAT-III) in all areas of child and adolescent development as needed.
- A demonstrated high level of competence and confidence in managing matters relating to child protection, mandatory reporting and risk of significant harm
- A current Working with Children Check or the willingness to obtain one
- Awareness of the needs of students in an all-boys school environment
- Knowledge of psychological research, theories and evidence-based practice in child and adolescent mental health and wellbeing.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- The ability to give attention to details in record keeping and clinical follow up
