Job description

  • Ongoing - Actual vacancy - Full time (37.5 hours per week)
  • $125,622 - $150,785 (plus Super + IFA)
  • Fairbairn - ACT, Russell - ACT
The Role
The Chief of Staff (CoS) to the Chief Defence Scientist (CDS) in Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) within the Department of Defence has overall responsibility for the management of the Office of CDS (OCDS).

They ensure that CDS is supported effectively in their roles as CDS; Capability Manager for Innovation, Science & Technology (IS&T); and Deputy Secretary of DSTG. The CoS is a crucial conduit between CDS, DSTG staff, broader Defence and the IS&T ecosystem.

This is a position of trust that requires agility, responsiveness, resilience and exemplar personal integrity. The CoS operates under broad direction and exercises a considerable degree of autonomy to provide high-quality, responsive support to CDS and the DSTG Leadership Team.

IFAs provide remuneration and/or other conditions in addition to the Defence Enterprise Agreement (EA). This arrangement is subject to meeting eligibility criteria and is subject to annual review. The additional remuneration provided through an IFA does not form part of your permanent substantive salary and could be ceased at any time. Should this occur, your salary will revert to the substantive salary amount offered.

About our Team
The CoS works as part of a small, high-performing Executive Support team in a fast-paced environment within DSTG Headquarters, based at Russell Offices and Fairbairn.

Reporting directly to CDS, the CoS oversees the OCDS directly and offers guidance to the Ministerial Coordination team when required. Working across the Defence ecosystem, the CoS interacts with external stakeholders in industry, academia and the public sector to respond to queries and explore opportunities for engagement with CDS or the DSTG Leadership Team (DLT).

Within DSTG, the CoS and deputy CoS together facilitate the provision of strategic, technical and administrative support to CDS and the DSTG Senior Leadership Team (SLT).

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate has a demonstrated track record of providing high-level policy guidance and strategic advice to senior leaders on matters including strategic engagement, gaps, opportunities and issues management.

They are responsible for providing political advice and situational awareness to CDS and the DSTG Senior Leadership including acting as a point of contact for Ministerial communication, STEM partners and other public sector agencies.

The candidate must be able to build and maintain strategic relationships with a broad network of stakeholders. The role also involves shaping internal governance matters with the DSTG Leadership Team, and actively collaborating with the DSTG Defence Science Communications team on communications products and strategic communications advice provided to CDS.
