Our client is seeking to engage an EL1/EL2 Work Healthand Safety Management System Officer on a contract.

Location: Canberra, ACT

Contract Length: Start – 26/02/2024, End – 15/07/2024, with option to extend up to 12 months

Security/Eligibility Requirement:Baseline or the ability to obtain

About the Role:

The WHSMS Development Officer drives continuous improvement in the development and review of the department’s Work Health and Safety Management System (WHSMS). In collaboration with the Assistant Manager, Safety and Wellbeing, the role is responsible for drafting and preparing priority documents within the WHSMS that consider the department and its operations, as well as the needs of key stakeholders across the business.

The role will also support the stakeholder and worker consultation process, considering and responding to feedback in relation to drafted policies and procedures, and any supporting guidelines, forms or other documents. Highly developed verbal and written communication skills are required to develop quality WHSMS documentation.

The WHSMS Development Officer will:

  • be responsible for the development and delivery of WHS policies, procedures and supporting documentation, drawing on current best practice and innovations in the field to improve safety and wellbeing
  • assess, evaluate and develop WHS policies and associated documentation, addressing gaps and making improvements, with reference to the future needs of the organisation
  • engage with internal and external stakeholders to identify needs in relation to the development of new or amended WHSMS documentation
  • work with the Assistant Manager, Safety and Wellbeing to ensure deficiencies in the WHSMS are addressed on a priority basis and prepare briefs on the progress of the WHSMS renewal project to key stakeholders

Key Capabilities:

The key areas of knowledge, skill and ability for this position are:

  • a detailed understanding of Work Health and Safety policies, practices, standards and legislation and how they can be practically applied to the workplace
  • the ability to deliver high quality project outcomes, on time and in line with expectations
  • the ability to build and nurture relationships based on trust and credibility with internal and external stakeholders
  • highly developed written and oral communication skills, including the ability to negotiate with and influence key stakeholders
  • the ability to demonstrate professionalism, impartiality, and integrity in dealing with others and managing sensitive information
  • effective analytical skills in gathering and investigating information at the broader departmental level to identify critical gaps and potential solutions

Additional requirements:
  • Post-graduate WHS qualification is desirable
  • Australian Citizenship is required for this role.
