About the role Reform Delivery is responsible for conceptualising, advocating for and delivering reform change for AEMO and for Australia’s Energy Markets.

The Energy Market Design Analyst, DER and Retail Reform contributes to the creation and development of multiple inter-related Energy Markets in Australia, with a particular focus on the market and technical integration of CER and traditionally demand-side resources. This includes the wholesale and retail electricity market and underlying power system operation. The aim of this role will be to analyse and influence policy and regulatory processes, support Energy Market Design and develop internal positions to maximise AEMO’s contribution to the success of Energy Market and power system operation into the future.

This will be achieved through delivering independent and critical analysis of current regulatory arrangements and options for improvement, supporting, and enhancing strategic partnerships with industry and government stakeholders, and making timely contributions to formal regulatory processes in a rapidly changing policy and business environment.

What you will be doing

  • Formal and informal analysis of current arrangements and options for improvement
  • Identify, develop, promote and/or advocate opportunities to influence Market Design, policy development, regulatory outcomes and AEMO internal positions through analysis of market data, research of regulatory and policy consultation
  • Identify issues that are barriers to competition in the market or efficient and appropriate use of consumer resources, and support engagement with internal and external stakeholders that will lead to improved market outcomes and better system integration
  • Market design and reform development, applying a broad understanding of Energy Market Design building on knowledge gained through previous first-hand experience across a range of Energy Market operations, research, or policy development
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders across market bodies, jurisdictions and industry while providing effective communication when progressing change or resolving issues
  • Liaise internally with senior and peer staff to co-ordinate work and ensure their needs are fully integrated into priorities and proposals
  • Clear and concise communication, including supporting the team to formulate and provide advice to Senior Leadership, including the Executive Leadership Team and Board on strategic options and priorities for AEMO
  • Develop briefing or other material to support knowledge sharing and collaboration with other regulatory bodies, Government entities, market participants, energy stakeholders and interested parties


What you will bring to the role

  • Tertiary and/or postgraduate qualifications in a relevant discipline such as Economics, Engineering or Finance
  • Experience in electricity distribution industry, energy analytics, retail or similar will be highly regarded
  • 2-5 years’ experience in the energy industry in commercial, market body, or governmental department
  • Academic experience, or some level of industry/policy experience will be expected to be demonstrated, particularly in reaching a tangible, practical outcome
  • Proven experience in Energy Market Design, operation, or analysis highly regarded
  • A sound appreciation of the technical and/or economic issues affecting the physical and market operation of Australia's Energy Markets
  • Ability to understand and analyse the structure and regulatory arrangements that underlie the operation of Australia's electricity and/or gas systems or markets
  • Demonstrated ability to provide reliable, well-founded recommendations on complex matters
  • Ability to assist in the negotiation and resolution of complex technical, commercial and policy issues
  • Demonstrated experience in producing high quality documents and presenting on content
  • Familiarity with modelling and analytical tools used in industry
