About the Team & the Position

The Onboarding and Connections (O&C) division manages AEMO's end to end process for connecting, registering and commissioning generators into the National Electricity Market. The Market Registrations team facilitates and manages the onboarding experience through collaborative, impartial and robust working relationships with all stakeholders. This in-depth process is key for anyone entering and/or participating in the National Electricity Market (NEM) or the National Gas Market.

This Team Lead position is responsible for change activities, encompassing the communications, education, and training for operational readiness, required to successfully implement reforms and streamlining AEMOs Registration function. This role will have oversight of a range of reform activities impacting Gas and Electricity markets and will be required to evaluate and prepare recommendations for change through analysis (i.e., impact analysis, assessment, scoping, requirements, testing and training needs) in collaboration with stakeholders through to operational implementation.

The Team Lead plays an important role in supporting AEMO project managers and in partnership with teams (across System Design, Operations and Reform Delivery) during change implementation and embedding new onboarding and connection practices, through ongoing engagement activities. They will also support the O&C Industry Partners to ensure that industry stakeholders (including State and Federal governments, generation developers, OEMs, NSPs, Participants) are aware of and understand how changes impact them.

Position Responsibilities

  • Constructive stakeholder collaboration with co-design focus and approach. Proactively ensuring collaboration across teams
  • Ownership of engagement and also deliverables from direct reports
  • Developing competency frameworks and standards
  • Leading a team of analysts, taking ownership of team performance, planning and reform related activities across a number of concurrent projects and initiatives
  • Develop and implement a business readiness framework to ensure consistency of approach
  • Proactively manage and be responsible for successful delivery of operational change activities including stakeholder engagement, change impact assessments, training and support.
  • Provide recommendations for Reform and identifying opportunities to streamline AEMOs Registration function.
  • Prepare clear, concise and high quality written and verbal communication to inform internal or external stakeholders on a range of issues for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Provide mentoring, coaching and expert guidance and frameworks for team members continuous improvement and development.
  • Reinforce a service-oriented co-design culture, based on partnerships and close collaboration within AEMO and across industry.
  • Foster an adaptive approach within the team and a culture of resilience in a rapidly evolving industry.
  • Ensure that decision making is fact-based, robustly documented, pragmatic and transparent.
  • Ensure written communication and documentation prepared by the team is clear, concise and appropriate for the intended audience (both technical and non-technical) before recommending management approval.
  • Proactively build AEMO's reputation as a trusted partner to AEMOs Market Reform team, generation developers, government, Network Service Providers, Market Participants and stakeholders

Position Requirements

Education/ professional Certifications:

  • Tertiary and/or post graduate qualifications in commerce, business project management and/or active Electricity or Gas industry experience.
  • Engineering or regulatory/policy qualifications favourable.

Skills & Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in leading teams.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing programs of work involving multiple parallel workstreams and deliverables.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing strategic energy reform projects that require extensive stakeholder engagement and negotiation.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and managing project teams – shaping a proactive and ownership-based team culture, fostering a service oriented, customer focused and pragmatic approach to problem solving.
  • Demonstrated experience in shaping and delivering business capabilities across a variety of stakeholders with conflicting interests, negotiating agreed outcomes and delivering these on time and on budget.
  • Flexible approach to planning to accommodate industry, regulatory and policy changes.
  • Understanding of the NER, the NEM and the Rule change framework.
  • Understanding of the challenges experienced by generation developers and their commercial drivers or constraints.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and stakeholder expectations under stringent project environments.
  • A continuous improvement mindset with the ability to cultivate collaboration and knowledge sharing within and across the AEMO organisation in a transparent manner
