About Us:
Bidgerdii Community Health Service is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community controlled primary health care service, operating in the Rockhampton and Central Queensland region for close to 30 years. The organisation is a bulk billing community-controlled health service, managed by a Board of Directors who oversee and manage the strategic directions of the service.
Bidgerdii provides comprehensive primary health and well-being services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in the Rockhampton and surrounding regions. Bidgerdii collaborates with health and well-being partner agencies to enable integrated continuity of care for the community and continue to work to contribute to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health policy and program reform in Queensland.
About the Role:
We are looking for the Environmental Health Worker to join the Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF) and Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) Project team. This is a 12-month fixed term position till June 2025 with possibility of extension. This role is based in Blackwater and travel to Rockhampton, Mount Morgan and Central Highlands will be required at various intervals.
The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting assessments and investigations to ensure Environmental Health and safety standards are met. This role requires excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
As part of this program will have the opportunity to share learning, identify common issues and support each other in the team to progress solutions at a local level on the prevention and treatment of ARF and RHD. This includes:
- Conduct assessments and investigations related to Environmental Health issues for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
- Develop plans and strategies for improving Environmental Health standards for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
- Promoting the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by providing education and information enabling them to take responsibility for their standards of living and home environment.
- Contribute strategies that address health and wellbeing issues for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in a participative manner, including advocacy across sectors such as housing and essential services.
- Process referrals received from primary health care workers for Environmental Health Assessment following the diagnosis of a skin infection.
- Contributing to the development of an Annual Work plan and project plans as directed.
- Provide regular reports on the number of Environmental Health clients contacted, number of new and recurrent cases of ARF diagnosed, number of newly diagnosed cases of RHD with no known previous history of ARF etc.
- Reporting project progress to the Programs Manager, and appropriate stakeholders (including funding bodies) and adhering to agree KPI’s and program objectives.
- Contribute towards health service changes which better meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including building capacity in health services to take a health promotion approach to communicable/ infectious disease.
- Support implementation of a systematic approach to Environmental Health, including referrals and appropriate documentation within patient information management systems.
- Utilising local planning to strengthen linkages with mainstream Environmental Health services and facilitate access to funded programs.
- Participating in relevant committees and working groups related to Environmental Health and engage with QLD Health Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Public Health.

Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships with people from diverse backgrounds including internal and external stakeholders and community members.
You a compassionate, optimistic individual wanting to make a difference in peoples’ lives especially our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community with the following:
- Tertiary and/or vocational level training in Environmental Health or a related field, and/or equivalent experience relevant to the position
- A relevant qualification to fulfil the requirements of the position may include public health, nursing or primary health care, community health or community development.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and collaboratively as part of a team with a well-developed computer knowledge and skills including Microsoft Office suite.
Practical Requirements:
- Current C Class Drivers Licence (QLD) – essential
- Satisfactory Police Criminal History Check.
