We are looking for an experienced Environmental Planner to join the Land Use Planning business unit on a permanent full-time basis.
This is an exciting time to join the Planning team which has seen progressive growth in the Wellington population and economy, with a focus on attracting new industry to the area that will help define the future development of the municipality.
Your role as the Environmental Planner will be to deliver a broad range of specialist advice about environmental matters to Wellington Shire's internal and external customers. You will demonstrate the ability to achieve efficient timeframes and facilitate informed decision-making on statutory and strategic activities. Ideally, you will be experienced in planning, having worked in the local government sector would be advantageous.
Key responsibilities include:
- Respond to internal and external requests or enquiries on environmental matters (principally native vegetation matters) through phone contact, written correspondence and site inspections in accordance with Corporate Performance Indicators.
- Provide environmental advice regarding strategic and statutory planning matters including processing and review of planning permit applications for native vegetation removal and seeking compliance with environmental conditions on planning permits in accordance with CPIs.
- Arrange for regular Timber Harvesting Coupe Audits by contractors within the budget provided for this activity and review of reports and take follow up action where necessary in accordance with CPIs.
- Assist with the processing of planning permit applications (including non-native vegetation removal permit applications) during peak periods when requested in accordance with CPIs and assist with general land use planning enquiries as required.
- Regularly monitor the current native vegetation information on Council's website and arrange for updates when required and undertake other community education initiatives to support improved understanding of native vegetation planning controls and landowner responsibilities.
- Represent Council on Technical Reference Groups for Environmental Effects Statements.
Excellent interpersonal skills along with a good working knowledge of planning regulations and assessment processes will see you be successful in this role.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate how they meet the criteria below:
- Tertiary qualification in Environmental Planning, Science or Natural Resource Management or related field.
- Sound organisational skills, ability to prioritise work to meet deadlines and achieve objectives, despite conflicting pressures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and customer service skills and an ability to liaise with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to negotiate innovative and practical solutions to issues as they arise from planning permit applications.
- Ability to maintain positive working relationships, contribute and work effectively in a team environment, as well as mentor junior staff.
- Practical IT skills applicable to statutory planning including the ability to prepare concise presentations, use Geographical Information Systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
