Our Brucejack operation is now recruiting for an Environmental Technician with a competitive base salary between $75,000- $85,000 dependent on experience, skills, and competencies with consideration to internal equity with an additional short-term incentive of 10%.

The job purpose is to support Newcrest's Environmental Department in working to fulfill the achievement of Brucejack Mine regulatory authorizations and legislated environmental requirements by taking a proactive role in identifying, mitigating, and resolving potential environmental concerns.

This position's primary focus is on field related tasks. Under the direction of the Principal, Environment and Environmental Superintendent/Coordinator, this position uses sound scientific protocols and procedures to implement the aforementioned programs, as well as other mine authorizations requirements.

The role will provide support for environmental monitoring and reporting activities and will be primarily field based with the majority of the time spent in the field.

Safety

Demonstrate absolute commitment and leadership in providing a safe working environment by:

  • Supporting the Safety Management System ensuring a safety-first work culture.
  • Ensuring adequate pro-active monitoring to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Taking a proactive risk management approach to departmental tasks (i.e., recognise, analyse, respond to ensure risks are at an acceptable level).
  • Ensure standard work procedures and safe systems of work are understood and adhered to with absolute compliance - monitor and report all non-compliance.
  • Participating in site safety initiatives, including being an advocate for NewSafe behaviours in the team.
  • Conduct FCCCs in accordance with agreed targets.
  • Close out CHESS incidents and actions within the required timeframe.

Technical

Demonstrate technical and operational excellence in:

  • Surface and ground water quality sampling.
  • Preparing and shipping samples to laboratories.
  • Authoring and/or support technical reporting to relevant regulatory and stakeholder bodies.
  • Uploading data to Environment Compliance and Commitment Registries.
  • Entering data into the Environmental compliance database (EQuIS - water database),
  • Co-ordinating and leading business partners and their activities in your area when required.
  • Co-ordinating and administering relevant environmental projects and studies when required.
  • Promoting and leading the implementation of the Environmental Standards and Environmental Policy within the workplace.
  • Conducting environmental inspections in the field.
  • Assisting and leading departments in the field clean-up activities.

Planning & Scheduling

  • Provide input into monthly, quarterly, and annual planning.
  • Ensure sampling schedule is maintained and implemented.
  • Ensure internal environmental inspections are scheduled, completed, and documented.
  • Supporting other departmental objectives and duties as required.

About You:

Position requirements include, but are not limited to:

  • Technical Diploma in environmental science or related field.
  • B.Sc. in environmental sciences or related field is an asset.
  • 1 to 3 years of environmental sampling and environmental monitoring experience.
  • 1 to 3 years of groundwater and surface water sampling experience.
  • Experience working in an industrial setting, including directing equipment operators and other personnel to implement measures required for environmental protection is an asset. Prior experience working at a remote mining operation is an asset.
  • Strong field skills in a remote environment is an asset. These include knowledge and experience conducting work in avalanche terrain; knowledge and experience working in Swiftwater and mountain lake environments; and operation of off-road equipment including motorized boats, snowmobiles, quads, and 4x4 pick-up trucks.
  • Working knowledge of Canadian federal and provincial (British Columbia) environmental regulatory requirements is an asset.
  • Attention to detail and proficiency with computers, particularly database management and interpretation, is an important asset.
  • Excellent communication, conflict resolution, time management and organizational skills are an asset, while being able to show strong interpersonal and teamwork capabilities.
  • Good analytical, problem-solving, and technical writing skills are an asset.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain a valid class 5 drivers license with a clean abstract.

Additional Information

  • Able to work at remote location (camp) on a 13 days on/13 days off rotation plus 2 travel days.
  • Able to pass a pre-employment medical screening and testing.
  • Be able to maintain high levels of performance over 12-hour shifts.
  • Able to work in areas of extreme weather conditions.
  • Able to work in close quarters with the team.
