Job description

About the Department of Education

The Department of Education (DoE) is committed to giving all children a great start and ensuring Queenslanders have the education and skills they need to contribute to the social, economic, and cultural development of the state. We are dedicated to creating quality early learning experiences and delivering world-class education services. The DoE is focused on aligning education and care systems with the state’s employment, skills, and economic priorities, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and resilience among students.

The DoE’s strategy, Equity and Excellence: realising the potential of every student (Equity and Excellence) sets a clear vision for a progressive, high performing education system. The strategy places students at the centre of the strategy, informing key initiatives so that every part of the system becomes more responsive to allow schools to help every student to reach their potential.

In its second year, the department has seen positive outcomes of the progress so far and it is an exciting time for new executive leaders to join and build on the momentum to see further lifts across the system.

About the Roles and You

We are seeking multiple dynamic Executive Directors to lead the DoE’s Statewide Initiatives across the following branches:
  • Curriculum
  • Disability, Inclusion and Student Services
  • Rural, Remote and Virtual Learning

These roles demand experienced professionals with exceptional public sector leadership and management capabilities. As Executive Director, you will be instrumental in formulating departmental strategy, policy, and direction to achieve the Queensland Government’s objectives and successfully implement Equity and Excellence.

The common thread between these positions will be that each be a key member of the division’s senior executive leadership team, overseeing the implementation of significant reforms and initiatives to ensuring excellence in service delivery. You will lead system initiatives from issue identification through to solution development and supported implementation, all aligned with best practice policy development and sound governance principles. Your responsibilities will include leading at level, building capability across the branches, and proactively identifying and implementing improvement strategies to optimise school and system performance.

Effective stakeholder engagement is crucial in these roles. You will be experienced and capable in engaging authentically and collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure policies, initiatives, and interventions are appropriate and secure their support for implementation.

These role require proactive leaders who can represent the department and the Queensland Government in various formal and informal settings, promoting and securing support for our educational objectives. You will provide high-level advice and information to support the implementation of the Equity and Excellence strategic direction and key initiatives. You will also oversee transformational and cultural changes within the department, reshaping service delivery with a focus on educational achievement, wellbeing, engagement, and inclusion.

About You
We are looking for three exceptional individuals who take pride and personal responsibility in serving the DoE and ensuring the public education needs of Queensland communities are met and that every student is supported to realise their potential. They will be leaders who can think critically and creatively, act strategically, lead with innovation in complex environments, and involve different stakeholders to get projects across the line.

Experience needed:
  • Proven record of success as a leader in a large, complex organisation.
  • Extensive experience across public, private, or not-for-profit sectors.
  • Strong background in strategy and policy implementation, service delivery, and client service.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • High-level integrity and ability to lead governance in line with public sector and community expectations.
  • Commitment to promoting health, safety, and wellbeing in the workplace.
  • Ability to build enduring relationships and inspire others.
  • Ability to foster a confident and capable workforce.

A teaching or school leadership background is not essential for all three positions, but a solid understanding of education as well as strategy, policy, and public sector leadership are a must for all three roles. Specific expertise relevant to the work of the three branches may also be highly relevant to the position:

The Curriculum, Teaching and Learning branch:
  • leads equity and excellence statewide in teaching, learning and service delivery through contemporary and fit-for-purpose resources and initiatives.
  • supports schools and regions with the implementation of the Australian Curriculum with resources, professional development and support.

The Disability, Inclusion and Student Services Branch:
  • develops and supports the implementation of policies, procedures and resources in relation to student protection, health, wellbeing, engagement, diversity, inclusion and school operations.
  • supports schools and regions to deliver services that enhance student safety, health, wellbeing, inclusion, engagement, and success.

The Rural, Remote and Strategic Initiatives branch enhances the capability and confidence of teachers in digital teaching and learning through strategies such as Generative AI, Digital Capability Program and the delivery of the Queensland Virtual Academy.

If you are a dynamic leader with a passion for driving educational excellence and equity, we encourage you to apply.
