  • Salary Package: From $80,753 - $91,815 (HEW Level 5) plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading.
  • Appointment Type: 0.6 FTE fixed-term position for 1 year with prospects of continuation
  • Macquarie University (Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde)

The Role
Macquarie University is seeking an Exercise Physiologist to join a team working on a lifestyle-based clinical trial. The evidence-based trial promotes lifestyle changes with the aim of slowing or preventing cognitive decline and dementia conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, in a population of people considered at high risk of cognitive decline.

Under supervision from the principal researcher, the key accountabilities of the role will be to:

  • Implement the physical activity intervention arm of the AU-ARROW study, following the AU-ARROW protocol as well as the Lead AU-ARROW Exercise Physiologist's guidelines, and in collaboration with another Exercise Physiologist.
  • Develop safe and effective exercise plans and recommend gym exercise/fitness sessions, taking into consideration the study goals of regular aerobic and resistance exercise, participant medical history and current health status, screening and assessment information and other influencing factors.
  • Introduce study participants (aged 55-79) to gym equipment and explain how to the equipment properly, at the various gyms that are involved in the study. This involves one gym visit per day.
  • Using pre-prepared study resources to deliver presentations to study participants in group meetings of up to 10 people to promote physical activity, provide education on healthier lifestyles and injury prevention, and to provide encouragement and support.
  • Complete basic physical assessments of study participants, if needed.
  • Together with AU-ARROW study research assistants, undertake administration tasks and data entry as required of a research study, including data entry into study-related logs and online case report forms, follow-up of gym attendance and assistance with fitness tracking devices/apps while maintaining confidentiality and sensitivity towards participant data.
  • Ensure all activities are conducted in line with AU-ARROW policies, protocol and standard operating procedures and Australian guidelines for good research conduct.
  • Comply with University research and ethics protocols and legislative requirements related to data collection and storage.
  • Assist with the preparation of research data for presentation and publication.
  • Comply with relevant EEO and WHS regulations.


About You
You will be an enthusiastic, adaptable and competent individual who will work under the direction of the Lead Exercise Physiologist of the project and in collaboration with the other Exercise Physiologist on the project. You will be able to show initiative and anticipate requirements, ensuring that deadlines and objectives are met. You will be capable of independent work, have outstanding written and verbal communication skills and pay attention to detail. Previous clinical trial experience not essential, but would be an advantage.

Essential Criteria:

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g., Exercise and Sport Science) and accreditation as an Exercise Physiologist with Exercise and Sports Science Australia.
  • Experience in the development of exercise plans and the implementation of evidence-based clinical interventions for clients in an older population.
  • Ability to organise and present information and concepts in a concise, understandable and interesting format to a variety of people.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others to accomplish joint tasks and common objectives while showing respect for others' views and opinions.
  • Computer skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of ICH-GCP guidelines or willing to complete training (2-3 hour online course).
  • Willing to travel to gyms (total 7 gyms in Sydney Metropolitan area, mostly Northern side)

Desirable Criteria:

  • Computer skills in web-based research platforms, such as REDCap.
  • Experience in conducting physical assessments.
  • Proficiency in using fitness trackers and apps (Fitbit) and troubleshooting issues.
  • Experience in managing and safeguarding confidential participant information.
