Job description

The Role:

Our clients own a renowned commercial medium wool, non-mulesed Merino breeding operation near Forbes, in NSW’s picturesque and productive central west. This family-owned and operated pastoral business is seeking an experienced and passionate Station Hand to help manage the operation with a
substantial focus on medium wool, dual-purpose Merino sheep, and prime lamb breeding across 5,500 ewes. This holistically run and highly sustainable property comprises 3500 ha and has been extensively developed with modern handling facilities.

The position will require the successful applicant to assist with and undertake all property management and livestock husbandry areas. To maximise production, you will be passionate about and willing to develop your skills and knowledge with Merino genetics, livestock management, feeding
regimes, and grazing techniques. An essential part of your role will be assisting and implementing breeding programs concentrating on the required traits and data recording. The cropping is outsourced and share-farmed; however, you will be required to assist across this area at some point.

Reporting to the owners, your duties include fencing and yard repairs, maintenance, and installation tasks. Livestock management will be at the forefront, with responsibilities that involve mustering, vaccinating, administering animal treatments, lamb marking, shearing, and livestock feeding. You will also be involved in activities around infrastructure development. Additionally, your role will require
attention to detail in performing general property maintenance duties, including the upkeep of livestock water systems.

The Property & Employer:

The property offers a mix of farming activities, including cropping and livestock, enabling you to gain valuable experience in both areas. The owners support and encourage on-the-job training and are happy to fund external courses to help maintain your passion and advance your skill set. If you are looking for a challenging yet rewarding role, we encourage you to apply for this position.

The Offer:

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual passionate about livestock farming and seeking a supportive and rewarding work environment.
Our clients are offering a generous remuneration package to the successful applicant. This includes a recently renovated 4-bedroom house with two bathrooms, a meat allowance, and a vehicle for work
purposes.

The property is 45 km from Forbes, boasting excellent sports clubs and a vibrant social scene. Forbes also provides plenty of work opportunities for partners, with a wide range of entertainment options. Eugowra and Gooloogong, located 18 km from the property, offer childcare and primary schools.

The Ideal Candidate:

Preferably, you will have some previous experience in agriculture, particularly in the Merino sector. It is also desirable to have the following attributes:

  • Previous experience in the sheep livestock industry, ideally with Merino’s.
  • Team of working dogs (or willingness to obtain).
  • General farm knowledge and skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Experience or willingness to learn software systems.
  • A passion for sustainable Agriculture with a willingness to learn.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Cropping knowledge (not essential but is helpful).
