Job description

The Mental Health & Wellbeing Locals is community-led and integrated through a collaborative partnership between us at Inspiro, Wellways, Eastern Health, and Oonah. The Locals are dedicated to placing the community at the forefront of mental health and wellbeing reform in the Yarra Ranges. The focus being on care and support for people who are experiencing mental health concerns – including people with co-occurring alcohol and drug treatment and care needs and their family, carers, and supporters.

Our Towards Change Team is seeking an experienced Family Therapist who will utilise their specialised expertise in supporting adults (26 and over) to enhance their mental health and wellbeing.

The role is ongoing, part time 0.4FTE, (2 days per week), and based mainly at our Lilydale site plus other sites if required (Yarra Junction and Belgrave).

About the role

This role is dedicated to fostering positive outcomes within the context of family dynamics, working with family members, carers and supporters as well as participants as they access services at the Local. 

The Family Therapist aims to contribute to improved outcomes for participants and their family, carers, and supporters. You will provide therapeutic counselling/psychotherapy, conduct comprehensive assessments, and support participants on their recovery journey within the family context, aligning with the overarching goal of mental health reform. You will demonstrate enthusiasm and a profound passion for driving mental health reform within Victoria's evolving mental health system.

In the role you will:

  • Facilitate therapeutic sessions with individuals experiencing mental health and/or addiction challenges, incorporating a family-centred approach to address the broader dynamics and support systems.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to understand the individual's challenges within the context of family dynamics.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team and other stakeholders to ensure a coordinated and holistic and tailored approach to care, integrating family perspectives into treatment planning.
  • Collaborate with participants, and where appropriate their families, to design and implement evidence-based treatment plans. 
  • Provide psychoeducation to families, carers, and supporters to enhance their understanding of mental health and addiction challenges, promoting empathy and informed support.
  • Address crises within the family context, implementing appropriate interventions and risk management strategies to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.
  • Advocate for the inclusion of family perspectives in treatment planning and decision-making processes within the mental health and wellbeing service, promoting a family-inclusive and collaborative approach.
  • Keep detailed and confidential records of assessments, interventions, and progress notes in compliance with ethical and legal guidelines
  • Offer expertise and consultation to the team within the Yarra Ranges Local, sharing insights on family dynamics and interventions for a more comprehensive understanding of the participant's situation.

About you:

  • Demonstrated high level of self-awareness and an ability to operate within clearly defined boundaries of responsibility.
  • Strong ability to convey warmth and openness in all communication.
  • Ability to practice self-reflection and hold a commitment to ongoing learning and professional development.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to contribute to service and team development and the promotion of the Local and its services. 
  • Capability to make informed decisions on reasonably complex issues, aligning with established policies and procedures, and adept at identifying and resolving problems or obstacles in collaboration with team members.
  • Capacity to work autonomously and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, efficiently managing multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of trauma-informed practice and practical experience in applying person-centred approaches.
  • Familiarity with single-session and brief intervention models of support.
  • Exceptional communication skills, encompassing proficiency in written, verbal, and interpersonal interactions.
  • Ability to work respectfully and creatively with CALD client populations, Indigenous Peoples and the LGBTIQA+ Community.

You will also have:

  • Tertiary Qualification in Family Therapy

  • undertake a current National or International Police Record Check
  • hold an Employee Working with Children Check

  • Australian Driver’s Licence

  • hold or be willing to obtain a NDIS Worker Screening Check, 
  • complete induction training and NDIS Workers Orientation Modules and
  • meet the mandatory COVID-19 vaccination requirements.
