Your new role
This newly created role will report directly to the Finance Manager and assist with Council’s management accounting processes, and responsibility for the timely and accurate reporting of statutory obligations including financial statements.
On a day-to-day basis you will be responsible for, but not limited to:
Assisting with preparation of the annual budget;
Assisting with preparation of the annual financial statements;
Liaising with Council’s auditors in a timely fashion and proactively resolving audit related issues;
Assisting staff with End of Period and End of Year reconciling and reporting procedures and work papers primarily to General Ledger, but also to other financial sub-systems;
Development of financial systems, policies, procedures, processes and controls for all areas within the financial accounting area;
Interpret and apply requirements of accounting standards and other applicable requirements for financial accounting, asset accounting, GST, FBT and reporting, preferably in the local government environment;
Monthly variance analysis and reporting;
Management of tax obligations including GST, PAYG and FBT;
Managing and training a small team of direct reports;
Development of financial systems, policies, and procedures; and
Internal business partnering across Council.
What you'll need to succeed (basis for selection)
To be successful you will possess the following:
Tertiary accounting qualifications. CA/CPA preferred, but not essential;
Substantial financial experience specifically with respect to applying Australian accounting standards, legislation, and reporting requirements of a complex and sizeable organisation;
High level financial experience of an electronic financial systems, advanced MS Excel skills, Technology One skills, and improvement of financial systems/processes;
Strong commercial acumen and advanced data and financial analysis skills to provide strategic decision making insights; and
Ability to manage large and often competing priorities/workloads whilst managing direct reports in the team.
