Job description

What do we do?

Howden Australia has an immediate need for an enthusiastic Fitter & Machinist to ensure new and aftermarket Howden products in the workshop and in the field are manufactured, overhauled, serviced and maintained to Howden standards and client requirements.

You will be working with Howden equipment which is installed in virtually all coal and gas fired power stations in Australia and SE Asia. Also with ventilation fans for underground mines in the heavy industry sector.

There may be occasional travel wwithin Australia to work on sites, often at short notice.

What needs to be done?

More specifically, your responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct strip & assessment, overhaul and repair works on various products, and complete accurate strip assessment and assembly reports. 
  • Assemble new mechanical equipment to engineering drawings and Howden standards. 
  • Perform dynamic balancing of rotating equipment and the alignment of mechanical components and machines
  • Machine parts to modify or manufacture as part of overhaul and balancing works using a manual mill and lathe
  • Undertake servicing of customer planned maintenance contracts, check equipment, carry out required maintenance and produce a report of work done in order to comply with the Service Level Agreement.
  • Carry out detailed machinery analysis, interpret results and liaise with Howden engineering department to efficiently resolve customer problems

What do you need to bring?

It is essential that you have at least 5 years previous experience and qualifications as a Fitter & Machinist Tradesperson, as well as a dogman or riggers qualification. We require someone with specific experience working with rotating assemblies on industrial, mining or power station equipment, competent in balancing, shaft alignment and overhauling small and large rotating assemblies and machinery.

You will need to be able to manage your time, working to short deadlines and changing priorities. You will also be an excellent communicator and problem solver able to deal with customers and resolve incidents. You will be a good decision maker using your judgement and experience to find the best technical/mechanical solutions as well as knowing when work needs to stop if it cannot be performed safely and needs re-assessing.

The following would also be highly regarded:

  • Experience overhauling fans
  • Experience overhauling compressors 
  • Experience overhauling turbines
  • Specialized knowledge in rotating machine equipment
  • Competent welder 
  • Experience working on mine sites, at power stations and general industrial sites
  • Formal training in HSE practices
  • First aid certificate
