Primary objective
To assist in the investigation of crime through the detection of forensic biology evidence particularly through item
examination and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analysis.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Undertake sampling of case work through the process of identifying, evaluating and testing for biological and physical
evidence.
2. Conduct DNA extraction, quantification, amplification and electrophoresis of reference and crime scene samples.
3. Perform general laboratory duties including the calibration of equipment, management of consumable stocks,
preparation of reagents/chemicals and procurement.
4. Utilise the NT DNA database in line with relevant legislation in a way that maintains the security and integrity of the
data.
5. Ensure National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) forensic accreditation standards are maintained.
6. Adhere to and maintain Workplace Health and Safety (WH&S), Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC)
requirements.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A Bachelor’s degree in science from a recognised tertiary institute majoring in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics
or similar.
2. Demonstrated analytical and evaluation skills including an ability to make sound scientific assessments and decisions.
3. Knowledge and understanding of laboratory QA/QC programs and the legal implications of accreditation standards.
4. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and part of a team to achieve results within strict deadlines.
5. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively including an ability to maintain confidentiality and impartiality.
6. Proven ability to interact effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
7. Understanding and a working knowledge Equity and Diversity practices and principles.
Desirable
1. Experience in a forensic biology laboratory including laboratory processing of DNA evidence and/or examination of
evidence items.
2. Post-graduate qualifications in molecular biology.
