Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre is a division of the Australian Government Department of Industry Science, Energy and Resources. Our Vision is “a better future for all Australians through engagement with science, technology and innovation.” We deliver on that vision through our Mission “to excite and motivate people through inspirational learning experiences”. Science communication is at the heart of what we do.
The Visitor Experience team contributes to this mission by delivering excellent customer and client service standards that enhance our visitors’ experience and interaction with science at the Questacon Centre in Parkes. We're committed to making engaging in science, technology, engineering, and maths, fun, interactive, and relevant. We raise science awareness and understanding through a range of hands on and educational experiences. We provide a vibrant centre, with well targeted exhibitions, programmes, and activities, underpinned by excellent customer service. The Visitor Experience team ensures a positive and inclusive work environment for all staff and visitors.
The opportunity
  • You will make visitors to the centre feel welcome, engaged, and inspired by Questacon’s exhibits, programs, and activities.
  • You will facilitate visitors’ exploration of exhibits to increase interest in science (some galleries may require continuous movement throughout spaces).
  • You will support visitors to operate exhibits (some exhibits may require physical activity such as lifting, bending, pulling, twisting, movement of objects)
  • You will ensure the public’s safety, including implementing emergency and security procedures, as required.
  • You will uphold the APS Values and Code of Conduct, Questacon Capability Framework and Standard Operating Procedures.

  • The availability to undertake shift work, with hours varying between 8.30am and 9.00pm over a 7-day roster.

What you will do
The Gallery Assistant is responsible for:
  • Creating an engaging, interactive, and entertaining experience for our visitors by delivering consistently excellent levels of customer service.
  • Leading, engaging, and inspiring our visitors on their exploration of exhibits using enquiry-based learning, and by providing high-quality science communication within our galleries.
  • Explaining, tailoring, and adapting science concepts, communication styles and instructions to support visitor understanding and engagement.
  • Proactively engaging in self-development opportunities to increase knowledge.
  • Assisting in maintaining Questacon galleries by ensuring all exhibits are clean and in working order, signage maintained, and galleries are visually appealing.
  • Ensuring the safety of staff, public and exhibits through monitoring of Workplace Health & Safety practices.
  • Displaying professionalism and foresight at all times and having the capacity and willingness to escalate issues as required.
  • Other duties as directed by supervisor.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this opportunity, candidates must:
  • hold or be able to obtain baseline security clearances, and maintain clearance at this level
  • hold or be able to obtain a current registration issued under the Working With Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 and maintain this registration for the duration of employment
  • pass a national police check
To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.
Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
Notes
The role is based on site at the Questacon facility in Parkes ACT.
A merit pool may be established and used to fill future vacancies within 18 months from the date the vacancy was first advertised in the Gazette.
The department does currently offer flexible work opportunities for many roles. This vacancy is ACT - Questacon - Parkes based, although flexible or remote work arrangements may be considered. Please reach out to the contact officer to discuss this further.
