Expertise and advice: Provide expertise and strategic advice to the President on the President’s functions and powers, and on matters that affect the operations and strategy of the AAT, including identifying and advising on a broad range of highly complex and/or highly sensitive legal issues and risks.
Legal responsibilities: As General Counsel of the Tribunal, have ultimate responsibility for legal advice provided within the Tribunal and management of external legal advice provided to the Tribunal.
Leading strategy: As a key member of the AAT’s strategic management committees, assist in shaping and implementing the AAT’s strategic direction and identify opportunities to improve the agency’s capacity for delivering its strategic objectives.
Specialist submissions and executive briefings: Monitor the AAT’s operating environment and identify issues relating to Law Reform, legislative developments and highly complex legal issues and prepare relevant submissions and executive briefings for the President.
Represent the Office of the President and the Tribunal: Participate in high level and strategic Tribunal and external committees and work groups as directed by the President, represent the office of the President in Tribunal and external forums and represent the Tribunal in some external forums.
Stakeholder management: Build and maintain productive, collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders – including the Attorney-General’s Department and other Government agencies, the Federal Court of Australia and the Law Council of Australia – to promote achievement of the AAT’s statutory objective and strategic priorities and facilitate the work of the President’s Chambers.
Leading people: Lead and direct the operations of the Law and Policy Branch, and as a member of strategic management committees, contribute to the effective leadership of the AAT’s people. Provide input to agency-wide workforce planning, promulgating and modelling the AAT’s desired values, and leading a collaborative and constructive culture.
