This unique senior position has responsibility for all aspects of leadership and operations management of Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY), a statutory authority managing over 102,000 sq kms of land in north-west South Australia – the APY Lands.
Your primary responsibility will be working with the Executive Board of 14 elected members to achieve community goals and priorities. In addition to supporting and working with the Board and day to day operational management, you will monitor and manage external stakeholder relationships and the organisation’s profile in social and traditional media.
The position works closely with the APY Director of Administration, a senior cultural leader in a two-way mentoring relationship. In this very remote location, safety and well-being for staff and the community are key priorities.
About APY
Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) sets out to be a visionary organisation facilitating Anangu leadership to build economic prosperity through culture and community engagement.
From its administrative centre in Umuwa (460kms south-west of Alice Springs), APY has responsibility under the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Rights Act 1981 (SA) for the management of the APY Lands - 103,000 square kms of land in South Australia’s north-west, including seven main communities and a number of homelands.
APY is a strong, stable statutory authority that operates within a highly political internal and external context. With a budget circa $10M annually and some 150 staff (45 permanent), the organisation’s commitment to consultation, strong financial systems, governance and staff development has paid off with demonstrated growth in income, assets and programs delivered.
In addition to Land Management, infrastructure development, mining, pastoral, lease agreements and water rights management, a number of new initiatives such as carbon farming and tourism are at various stages and will provide opportunities for further development of APY’s operations.

About You
You’ll be a senior executive and the Statutory Officer with significant experience in an Aboriginal-controlled organisation, ideally of comparable complexity, reporting to an Aboriginal Board. Your governance and financial management capabilities will be supported by a good understanding of relevant legislation and practical hands-on leadership and operational management.
Success in this role will require cross cultural competence, personal authority, resilience and the ability to navigate a complex political context, within the organisation and externally. You’ll be willing to listen and learn, with regards to both cultural and operational matters; and be accustomed to working with traditional owners from remote communities.
You will be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and communicate effectively with stakeholders, including community members, board members, executives, staff and politicians.
You’ll have some knowledge of the relevant operational aspects of the business, such as Land Management, pastoral leasing, lease agreements, mining and water rights; degree qualifications from an Australian university and a committed interest in living and working in this unique and beautiful part of Central Australia.
About the Benefits
An appealing salary package circa $250,000 will be negotiated with the successful candidate that includes accommodation, vehicle, phone and relocation allowances, 10 weeks leave annually, and salary sacrifice opportunities.
