Access theThe successful candidate will ensure the effective, efficient development and provision of genomic based consultation and high level advice, reports and scientific data on aspects of genomic epidemiological analyses of Public Health microbiology/virology to internal, local, state and national clients, to support routine state and national surveillance systems of notifiable diseases and to deliver genomics analysis and interpretation around specific epidemiological investigations.Key competencies (role specific criteria)You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • High level of knowledge and skills in the application of genomics and the subsequent interpretation and integration with epidemiology in public health surveillance and outbreak investigations for notifiable and emerging bacterial and viral pathogens.
  • Ability to provide authoritative advice and counsel in matters relating to public health genomic epidemiology to stakeholders at a local, state and national level.
  • Ability to contribute to working as part of a team of scientists and bioinformaticians providing molecular/genomics microbiology/virology testing services.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills in providing expert evidence and advice, complex report writing, documentation development, liaison and consultation skills with a wide range of clients and specialists, including the dissemination of scientific knowledge through publications and presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to a laboratory service that is compliant with NATA/NPAAC/ISO/IEC17025/15189 quality accreditation, standard methods and relevant regulatory guidelines and professional standards.
Qualifications, registrations and other requirements
  • The successful applicant must hold at least a recognised tertiary degree (or equivalent) qualification in a relevant discipline of science, medicine or public health.
  • While not mandatory, experience in working in genomics scientific team or a postgraduate qualification in Public Health or Epidemiology is highly desirable.
  • The successful applicant must undertake a mandatory Australian Federal Police security clearance, prior to the commencement of clinical duties.
  • In some circumstances and following consultation, the successful applicant may be required to participate in on-call or weekend roster arrangements.
  • Please detail any visa conditions you may have if you are not a permanent resident of Australia.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) requirements
  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella, Varicella and SARS-CoV-2.
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
  • Existing staff that are engaged prior to 1 July 2016 are not subject to this condition of employment unless they apply for a role with VPD requirements that is with a different Queensland Health entity (i.e. one HHS to another HHS, department to a HHS, or HHS to department).
